Dunman High School (Junior High)

my child is in year 2 now. She is asking if she should take double double or triple science 1 humanities. What are the pros and cons?
She is also particular about not getting into 3M because it is the school’s policy to fill 50% of 3M with Chinese Scholars. The general perspective is that the scholars tend to be very competitive. I am also not keen on that environment as my other child in another IP school complained that the english curriculum is held back to cater for the scholars’ pace.
Has anyone had the similar experience and requested for a change in class if posted to 3M?
Thanks in advance. -

I think in DHS, there is a separate EL lesson to cater for the PRC scholars...(hear fr my gal, dunno if it is accurate)my child is in year 2 now. She is asking if she should take double double or triple science 1 humanities. What are the pros and cons?

Btw, the PRC scholars seen in my gal's class are v hardworking...so it's not a bad thing to be in the same class as them...

Hi
Asking on behalf of a friend, between E lit, geography and history, which one is easier to score in Year 3 and 4 for DHS, from a GPA angle? Which of these 3 subject needs most memory? -
@Augmum
Thanks for the information on EL. Usually the more competitive, the less willing to share

Hello, I’m a Year 4 Student, currently taking triple science and Geography.
To make it clear, it is not true that 50% of 4M are PRC Scholars. There are only 4 of them, out of 25 students. There are more PRC scholars in other classes. An increasing number of them are choosing to not take Biology and they end up in other classes. This is because the M class usually has Science enrichment and those PRC Scholars are not offering Biology.
The classes with better average GPAs at Year 2 are those which the PRC Scholars are admitted to. It could be because of the Maths and Science enrichment offered. PRC Scholars are only offered Geog or Hist but they usually take Geography.
PRC Scholars offer "English Language" instead of "Language Arts". They have to take the ‘O’ level English examination.
With regard to selecting a humanities subject, there is no "easier subject to study for" because it would depend on your child’s inclinations. I am not doing too badly for Geography now but if I were to sit for a History examination, I may well be the lowest-scoring student. Nevertheless, I personally feel that Geography may be easier to do well in (not score) with just memory work. Scoring requires more skills and thinking.
To add on, Chinese literature is also offered at Year 3, as a humanities subject. I heard that the test constitutes memorising some texts. A girl once scored full marks for a test. If you have the aptitude and interest in C. lit, it can be a very good option to go for.
As for the number of classes for the various subject combinations, it really depends on each batch of students. My batch has eight triple science classes, two double science classes and two classes with 7 units. The ‘A’ class is for ‘O’ level students. It is also good to note that more students are opting for 7 units simply because they would be able to do better. The top students last year for year 3 and 4 only offered 7 units. -

Nice to see input from another Dunmanian....
Actually, i was intrigued by the poster's comment tt it's the sch policy to fill 3 M by 50% PRC scholars...Thot it is a new policy....
Yup...there is no easy to score subjects, esp when one goes higher in level...
It all boil down to individual passion, aptitude n hardwork... -

Thanks for the clarification: my child told me about it and was quite adamant in not going into 3M. We decided not to opt for enrichment in Science/Maths as a result so as to avoid that class as she thinks that it is too stressful.

I am very out of touch with the secondary school admissions, now that there are so many different options and routes to apply through.
My purpose here is to seek some clarifications and advice on behalf of my neighbour, whose daughter will be taking her PSLE next year. Although DHS is one of their top preferences, the mother admits that she is not sure about many things.
1) Is DHS DSA exercise for the IP only?
DHS is an IP sch, so Yes, DSA exercise is for IP ....
Only those who cannot meet the promo criteria to IP at the end of yr2, would be streamed to O level class...
3) If accepted through Wushu, she is bonded to the CCA for 6 yrs? Can she have a 2nd CCA? Is Wushu training demanding?
Yes, u can have 2 CCA...
U can change CCA when goes to SH ( yr5)....
5) Does DHS have a separate class ( or classes ) for Sports DSA students?
No separate class for sports DSA, all will be mixed.... -
Would anyone know what are the class sizes like for Year 3s and 4s?
Why were some classes kept smaller than others?
