      INNOVATE:
RI/RGS-RI HCI/NYGH-HCI Which one to choose as top choice?

Firstly, i would like to congratulate parents/pupils for their stellar performances.

Today, i would like to share my view from the strategic point. Approximately 65%-70% of our top scholar come from RI and HCI, as such, their options hve an impact on the outcome of their future applications. Even though one may argue that some kids may not opt to serve the bonds, it is still critical to them in their applications to top US unis, oxbridge or top coveted courses in medicine and law.

Selection base on input from open houses, culture, popularity, or top pupils proceeding to RI/RGS, i think is not the most critical. The selection criteria should be based on which instituition is most suitable for you in line with your objectives. In short, which instituition can bring the best out of you to achieve your fullest potential.

For pupils who excel in the areas of maths/science should attempt to go to RI/RGS. This is an area i feel they hve proven to be consistently outstanding. For pupils who excel in humanities or wish to study in Peking or Tsinghua unis, than the obvious choice is HCI/NGHS. Is advisable not to transfer from one instituition to another during yr5 as the students need to hve very good cca records in support of their applications to top unis or courses. Imagine if one transfers from RI to HCI or vice versa, he/she would hve lost their peers support in being elected to posts of President/Vice-President or exco members of student councils or other top posts in their respective ccas. Leadership positions in ccas are mandatory requirement in all the above applications. Ivy league unis consider winning international competitions as the most impt criteria in addition to excellent academic records.

As for top local courses such as medicine and law, good ccas record is no longer just an advangtage it is mandatory inorder to be invited for an interview.
May I add that while CCAs, CIPs and competitions (especially international ones like the Internaltional Olympaids) are important, it is important that we recognise that at most universities your academic results is still the FIRST cut. If you do not get enough university admission points based on your results, you will not be even called up for the interview where you can \"show off\" your achievements in CCAa, CIPs and competitions.

For example, if you do not obtained anything near to the perfect admission scores (90 points) for NUS medicine, you will not even be called up for the interview!

Choosing RI as yr top choice is going to be a big mistake. Unless he has something good to offer on appeal otherwise, his chances of being posted to HCI is going to be severely affected vs others with similar score choosing HCI as top choice.

I would advice you choose yr 3rd choice wisely.

I'm sure he did. 🙂 You must be very proud. So has he decided HCI or RI?

we are happy for him and very proud of each of his teachers who have given their best to bring out the best of each one in the class (lowest in class is 249)

RI or HCI - what is your advice ?

              RI.

It have a much longer illustrious history. Most overseas university are familair with the RI/RJC brand and they know that it stands of excellence.

Just my thoughts[/quote]But then Peking and Tsinghua university are more familiar with HCI. Yes...of course people will say how can Peking and tsinghua compare to Harvard and Cambridge. My view is that the era of western domination is coming to an end, how much longer can it still last, I don't know but it is ending....Who knows that in 10-20 years times, Peking and Tsinghua may be top university in the world and Harvard and Ivy leagues may slowly lost their lustre.....I know I kept repeating this theme but it is just my opinion and one way of looking at thing.

Re innovate 's analysis on HCI vs ri.

My son scored a* for both maths and science but only managed an a for his languages. However his t score of 255 + 2 may make it for HCI but not ri. Also all this while his languages r not as strong as maths and science. I would like him to go to ip school and he has a gd chance to get into HCI but should he try for ri though chances r slim?
Do not waste your choice. Suggest you put HCI his first choice if he is keen to get in. You may want to consider NJC as their Maths and science is strong too.

Peking and Tsinghua are now considered as elite unis. Grads of these unis are warmly welcome in leading western societies.

My son got 249 + 3(HMT distinction). We have a few schools in mind:

                      Xinmin
                      BPGHS
                      Rivervalley
                      Nan Hua

Anyone can help to see if these schools are okay or give some other schools which is suitable? :?:
May I know where are you located? Xinmin is in Hougang and River Valley is in Boon Lay.

With a score of 249 + 3, he should be able to get into RV without any problem. BPGH and NH are good too, but again it depends on where you are located as they are quite far from each other. And why Xinmin when it seems to me that you are located in the West based on the schools that you have selected.

You may want to consider Bukit View, Hillgrove, Greenridge.
