From an employer’s point of view, the secret to taking in part time staff is "twinning". That is: You and a friend take the same job. You take AM, she takes PM. Or you take Mon,Wed,Fri and she takes Tue,Thu,Sat. But I guess most mums want to take only the AM slots so finding their "twin" might be a bit tough.

The net effect is that the job is done and whatever "handing-over" takes place transparently without the employer having to manage anything more than 1 full-time employee.

twinning may not work if both part time staff wants only to do minimum.
i almost successfully done part timing (3 days a week; 'almost successful' was because coy kept loading me with projects thinking that i am super efficient  when i actually done work on my off days at home) when i paired up with an assistant who was a go-getter. he wanted to learn as much as he could, wanted guidance, but boss could not pass him projects as he was a junior/newbie. i was real lucky at that time.... :boogie:

You are right, jedamum. Finding the right twin is easier said than done. Sometimes the imbalance in load-sharing becomes an issue and sour the relationship. Also when the commitment of one twin changes over time, the work arrangement will be derailed and puts the employer off this part-time experiment.

            carebear:
Part time clinic assistant, part time patient service assistant in a hospital part time bank staff, part time security guard.........

The other issue I can think off is the pay. I mean, there are so many of you mothers out there who are well-educated, well-paid corporate people ... Half a day as a part time teacher or receptionist is not going to be financially rewarding...

If you teach in tertiary institution (poly, uni), it is possible to negotiate the hours that you prefer.

I teach part-time in a uni from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm (leave around 1pm or 1.15 pm depending on students’ consultation) two days a week. This work is also meaningful for me because I get to influence the students’ thinking and also chat with them to find out what the youngsters are thinking - useful tips to handle my tweens.

Ming, what about a financial advisor? Is there flexibility in that?
