      Teach your children to swim.

I can understand garmen thinking esp for boys having to go thro NS.
If the boys don’t clear NAPFA and knows how to swim b4 they serve NS in combat vocations - they will suffer more.
      1st sit:
When I was a trainee in NS, I didn’t know how to swim properly. In one of the training session to test your confidence, each of us in No. 4 dress with boots was made to go up the 10m platform to go jump into the pool.
Me at 10m platform looking down: "I can’t swim"
      Instructor: "jump!"
Silly me buay kia si just jump. Thought I would drown on the way down , but thank GOD Archimedes Principle n natural buoyancy works.

      2nd sit - river crossing:
We were being trained for river crossing using a rope across the river n using an infantry assault bridge. Before this exercise, we were instructed to get into the river with SBO n rifle and just float about. Trust me, it’s scary if one can’t swim cos’ u are thinking all this weight is gonna drag me down.
With the assault bridge, there is no lifeline or guyline - and u are probably thinking what if I misstep and fall into the river.

So…please teach your children to swim.

Yes I agree swimming is very important. Even a poolside party can be potentially dangerous and a moment of negligence can cause a lifetime of pain. So equip the kids to help themselves.

          Hi

Pls advise on the average, how long must a child (about 10 yr old) learn to swim in order to be eligible to take the test to attain the bronze cert?

          Thks in advance.
I think it depends on how fast the child learns, one child can take 6-8 months to achieve that, another can take one year or even more, so all depends on how fast the child learns and picks up.

            Hi Hifive,

I do agree with 25hourmaid. It depends on the child. In my experience, on average for 10 year old kid, it will take about 6months to 9 months. This is provided that the kid is not water phobic and is reasonably fit. The basic criteria for passing the test is that the student would need to have sufficient strength and endurance. 😉

If the child can swim well, must the child have to hire a coach in order to get those cert?

what is the registration procedure and requirement if we don't go through the coach. I supposed it should be cheaper and efficient that way as long as we get the exam requirement right (where to get this information? from particular website?)
              Hi amylgf,

Usually, the child will still need a certified coach to get those cert. In the test form, there is a portion that will need to be signed by the coach or the parent. Although, it is stated that the parent can sign to recommend that the kid can go for the test, some test centres are quite particular and request that only a certified coach can sign the portion.

In many public swimming pools, the child is also not allowed to practise with pyjamas on their own with the parents. They can only practise the pyjamas portion under the supervision of coach. This is due to safety reason and I have seen a number of life guards enforcing this.

Thus, the child will not be able to practise for the test. 😉

Can a child bypass Bronze exam and go to the next level like Silver exam? Thanks.

Why would u want to do that?

One normally has to pass from one certified level to the next higher level.

what if the kid had bad eczema?

any idea whether she/he can be exempted from the compulsory swimming lesson with a letter from doctor/parents? or it depends on school policy? :?

Usually can be exempted from swimming lesson if there is a letter from doctor. Cos those who has eczema MUST avoid swimming in chlorinated water.

Such kid must shower immmediately after swimming or even just a dip on the chlorinated pool. Use screenblock if necessary and they must avoid hot sun too. Hope this help.
