Call up the school, to inquire:-

Does the Principal (Secondary school) give only one talk inside the Auditorium in the morning,

Or

give Total 2 talks : one in the morning + another one in the afternoon ?
Ask them, the Principal talk or briefing, start what time?

It is free & easy. U can walk in or walk out any time u prefer. But just note that there may be certain talks or performances happening at fixed timings. So if u want to catch these specific events, then check out the timing first to avoid disappointment.

Sharing our experience last year:

- SJI website indicated they have Fencing CCA, but at open house we didnt see any Fencing booth. Upon asking the usher, he said only for existing Sec 2 onwards cos they were winding down the CCA and not taking in any younger ones.

- SJI website indicates they have Scouts CCA which my son was keen on, but upon visiting their booth, we learnt that they don’t do any marching drills at all, mostly building of wooden structures. That changed my son’s mind about joining the CCA.

- ACSI website indicates they have Shooting and Squash, but upon asking our usher whether we could view the training facilities, he said not open to public, not even on open house day. They only recruit DSA kids for these CCAs. And must be competition winners.

- your child may be fixated on a particular CCA, but at open house sometimes they get to try out various other CCAs for fun. I asked my kid to be open to this, and he was pleasantly surprised the SJI boys were happy to let him try out Guitar & Squash. At a co-ed school open house, he was puzzled to find out Badminton was only for boys. And that while no Scouts, there was ODAC which had similar activities that he liked.

When parents bring kids to open houses, what are the things that you look for?

My main reason for open house visits is to suss out the culture of the school. Both my kid and I are “experiential” learners. So how the environment “feels” to us matters highly.

From the type of welcome we receive at the gate (are the ushers friendly & confident?) to the main thrust of the Principal during the talk (does he or she emphasize their special programs? Academic accolades? Do they pray with the audience before/after the talk? Does all this resonate with my own family’s beliefs?) Take the chance to speak & interact with the student ushers & get a feel of how much they like the school, are they truly happy there & why? I open my eyes big big to observe all the students there & hear how they talk (with one another). Some schools felt like family, very encouraging to each other. Other schools’ kids felt like super awkward & unconfident, as if unhappy being arrowed to serve on a Saturday.

For DSA candidates (in this May open house season), it is a good time to find out from the CCAs what type of candidates they are really looking for (thus assess your chances). For S1 posting candidates, find out usually how many slots are leftover in that CCA for non-DSA. Sometimes the CCA you target is extremely popular & hard to get in. No point choosing a school only for the CCA but cannot join the CCA in the end.

Some schools may share more at open house P talk or DSA talk. Info you cannot find from website. Friend got info of o level stats from dsa session. Physical visit can allow you child to compare different schools settings and culture. Can talk to students reps etc. Hopefully can find out if maths, sci depts are strong or humanities are stronger etc.
