Hi. I'm not affiliated to the following but I find their resources very good- Sigaram wordsmith and Tamilcube - you can get these from popular bookstores and openschoolbag.sg respectively or the centers' websites ( just type in any search engine). Openschool bag has actual PSLE papers and other recent Tamil resources.
Most books from these siteshave been updated to the latest format.

I suspect they offer HMT in Tamil because it is offered in Chinese and from P1 in SAP primary schools. If MOE does not give option to other languages, it may reflect badly on them as giving higher priority to Chinese language over the other languages. πŸ˜‰
If you don't get any extra points in PSLE, there is simply no real need to do it. The kids who are good in Tamil will do just fine by doing normal Tamil.
But nowadays more and more kids are finding it difficult to even converse in Tamil adequately. So even normal level of Tamil will be difficult. The problem is lack of expose to the language in early childhood. Even for enrichment classes, books and materials, it is so difficult to find them unlike for other languages, especially Chinese.
I wonder if there will be changes made to this in the new PSLE scoring system. They should offer deduction of points for children who do higher mother tongue to make it more worthwhile.

I am doing that and I constantly get A*(>91). For mastery in Tamil for PSLE, reading books is a very good way. my daughter’s school seems to discourage students from taking HMT. they say it does not help in the T-score and the time spent on it is better spent on other subjects. If that were the case, then why have it in the first place. I am sure the objective of learning Tamil must go beyond just grades. can someone please enlighten me on the benefits of taking HMT.

What i think is, no need to put any extra effort for Higher mt. Just sit in the class and listen to teacher. Do what you can. Surely you will get to know few new words and nice sentences, which will add to your current vocab and this will be useful for normal mt.
