Well, I checked Fencing Singapore (the official governing body for the sport in SG) website, it *is* one of the officially-recognized affiliate clubs:

http://www.fencingsingapore.org.sg/affiliates/

But I’ve never heard of them before. Maybe they are new or very small. Maybe u can call them and find out more.

I was wondering if how much is the estimated cost for all the gears and other stuff needed if an 8-year-old kid wants to do fencing?

Some clubs will loan you their stuff for one term. If kid decides to continue then you buy brand new.

I have some outgrown clothing for small-sized 8 year old, right-hander, can pass to u free if you need.

How old is your child? Some places are better in teaching younger kids. Some specialize in training the teens. And few cater properly to the in-between category.

Oh alright, am interested to send my kid to do sabre as it looks more interesting than the other weapons(watched videos on youtube). I also saw their pricing list and it seems like they offer much cheaper rates than other clubs like z fencing… guess i’ll check them out, thanks for the reply!

I heard their female fencers are very good, always prominently winning the competitions. But I enquired before - they only teach Sabre, no Foil or Epee.

Hi...I’m not sure what you mean by did he improve...cos his nature was already like that. It wasn’t cultivated by his fencing training.

Conversely, some kids do not like to obey the coach’s instructions. Or they dislike repetitive steps in training eg keep doing the same exercises x10 to build strength & stamina. Or they don’t see the point of dressing up every single time in all those multiple layers of fencing clothes for safety...such kids are not suited for fencing IMO. To elaborate...in fencing, the movements are extremely precise, more than any other sport or martial art. The placing of the feet needs to be at that certain angle, the lunge needs to be practised over and over again, the arm hand must be able to aim & hit at the precise target area. The child should enjoy (not just tolerate) such “drilling” kind of repetition exercises.

At the other end, there are other kids, maybe too rigid rule followers, who cannot think or see outside the box. They may get all the technical skills, but cannot apply them during competitions when the opponent may throw a dozen different tactics to mess with your brain. Such kids also cannot progress very far...

We went there for one of their open house events. The venue is big and clean, customer service was friendly and good. I noticed the coaches can be quite strict at times.

A suggestion: if you are undecided, feel free to request a trial lesson. Some places may require a trial fee, but that’s fine in my eyes as I get to observe and evaluate the coach’s training and engagement style with my kid. If you never get to try first, it’s hard to commit a whole term’s fees just like that.

More about Fencing. Saw this article posted by Asgard Fencing School on its FB Page today. It’s written in the American context, but it gives an insight into the *mental* agility also required in this sport. A good lifelong skill to develop and have.

[/quote]There is no “best age”. Plenty of adult learners and teen beginners.

There are preschoolers but most aren’t mature enough till around age 6. As a parent, I have seen common problems among younger kids are: lack of ability to take instructions, lack of ability to concentrate (usually boys) and lack of physical stamina particularly in the legs, lack of general coordination (usually girls). So don’t waste your money on lessons until at least age 6-7. Before that it’s all generally playing around.

The coaches I’ve spoken to all told me the “peak” age for this sport is around 15 years old. Meaning your “investment” will not show until the child reaches age 15 as most of the competitions are for this age group. It takes many years and years of training but I suppose fast learners and those with aptitude will fare better than others (as with any sport).
