For CL, it accounts for 25% of the total score. LC is worth another 10%. Thus, it would be important and beneficial to start preparation now - start conversing in full, \"longer\" sentences using Mandarin on a consistent basis (common oral topics to prepare for can be found https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=102404#p2064158 - focus on expressing 看法 views and 建议 suggestions) + read the passages from lower Pri text books.

读
For Paper 2, out of 90 marks, 64 marks are actually MCQ based questions. Of these 64 marks, the 1st 2 sections (语文应用，短文填空 - basically testing on words/phrases covered in syllabus) can be \"drilled\" via 死记硬背 (a.k.a. learn by heart almost guarantee can handle). That's another 20% worth of overall marks (40 out of 200).

写
For compo (20%, 40/100), her target should be to pass it/be close to passing it (i.e. level 3 for content and language under the rubrics found https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25131&start=970#p1893302) - so work towards writing complete sentences, covering the details of the given 5 pictures + her own ending (similar to 看图写句子 which the students were introduced to when they were in lower Pri levels).

读、写
For OE compre, be realistic and target to get as many marks as possible from questions 34 - 37. These will account for 10-11 out of the entire section's 22 marks. Q34 and Q35 can be tricky because student needs to understand the meaning of given definition but once they clear that barrier, it is not too difficult to score because the answers are either 2, 3 or 4 Chinese characters phrases. Q36 and Q37 are questions from the lower levels of https://cdn.vanderbilt.edu/vu-wp0/wp-content/uploads/sites/59/2019/03/27124326/Blooms-Taxonomy-650x366.jpg (usually the understanding or applying levels), thus it is possible to find the relevant pointers to include into the answers from the passage (a.k.a. \"lifting\" of answers). In order words, when practicing OE compre, just focus on the 1st 4 questions, esp. the 3rd and 4th (7-8 marks in total at stake).

Some answering techniques I shared previously can be found in this https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=102404&start=20#p2067257.

You can show your niece the following examples of how it's possible to improve for CL by strategizing/applying targeting practices even for someone with a weaker foundation in the language as a way to improve her motivation and belief (even though some examples were from the aggregate score era, CL exam format wise, the current one is in existent since 2017):
https://sandaochinese.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/result1.jpg
https://sandaochinese.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/result5a.jpg
https://sandaochinese.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/result17.jpg
https://sandaochinese.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/result33.jpg
https://sandaochinese.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/kn.jpg

Lastly, if you were to source for tutoring options for CL it would be advisable to go for 1-to-1 option + discussing similar plans/area of focus as stated above with the tutor, to maximize the efficiency of each lesson.

chenlaoshi

Reply to All About Preparing For PSLE on Thu, 23 Nov 2023 15:15:05 GMT

Kanji89\" post_id=\"2123252\" time=\"1700724384\" user_id=\"203352:

Hi Wing & slmkhoo,

That is very inspiring, I too believe that she is able to achieve something in life.

Sure! Are all the scores out of 100? If so, she is weak in every subject. Her command of English and Chinese are just below borderline.

Languages are actually the easiest to upgrade through reading voraciously. You need to identify something she is interested in, and then find some books so that she can read about that subject. Going for tuition on languages would have killed my interest in the subject, because reading English for the sake of English would have bored me to tears. As for Chinese, you might want to talk to @<bdi>chenlaoshi</bdi> on KiasuParents, as he might have some suggestions. I'm not sure as my Chinese sucks

Math, on the other hand, will require some specialized coaching and it looks like she needs personalized training. First learn the concepts. Then application of the techniques through lots of practice. It is only through these practices that things will become clearer to her over time, and this will lead to improvement. You may want to PM some of the folks helping out on AskQ here. I think some are tutors and maybe they can find some time to help out.

Science is actually a \"version\" of English. If you are good in English, that will definitely help you out in Science.

All in all, I think she will definitely need tuition for Maths. It will have to be one-to-one, as I think she needs someone to troubleshoot her personally. Stick to that for 3 months before you start working on other subjects.

ChiefKiasu

Reply to All About Preparing For PSLE on Thu, 23 Nov 2023 07:26:24 GMT

slmkhoo\" post_id=\"2123234\" time=\"1700714112\" user_id=\"28674:

Kanji89 - I agree that finding the right tutor is important - 1-to-1 initially so she can ask questions and build foundation may be what she needs at first. Some of these issues should be dealt with before thinking about tuition.

After looking at those issues, identify her weakest subjects. Maybe getting tuition for 1-2 subjects might be good. Tuition for all subjects is a heavy load, for child as well as the parents. If it's lack of discipline and motivation, perhaps those should be addressed first. The motivation is now there, but perhaps she needs help in drawing up a timetable for the time at home, and in planning how to approach daily work as well as make time for revision. If she has time-wasting habits (dawdling, phone use, etc), those should be cut back as well.

Does she have any learning disabilities? Why are her classmates laughing at her? Some of these issues should be dealt with before thinking about tuition.

After looking at those issues, identify her weakest subjects. Maybe getting tuition for 1-2 subjects might be good. Tuition for all subjects is a heavy load, for child as well as the parents. See if she can manage a couple of the subjects on her own, with school teachers' help, etc. She might also need some remedial work during the holidays to \"patch\" some gaps before the next school year begins.

Hope this helps.

sharonkhoo

Reply to All About Preparing For PSLE on Thu, 23 Nov 2023 00:14:38 GMT

Kanji89\" post_id=\"2123187\" time=\"1700684735\" user_id=\"203352:

Dear all,

Thank you for spending time reading this post.

Reading many posts from the forum, I see that the kids foundation for PSLE should be done at P4/5.

I’m not sure if it is too late now since my niece will be P6 next year (2024), I would like to see if there is something I can do to help her improve her study as she cried to me today after seeing her brother getting AL 21.

She mention that her classmate are laughing at her because she got AL 29 and she really want to do better for her PSLE.

I can feel how helpless and stressful she is, I want to do something for her but the only way I can think of was enrolling her into tuition so that there is someone there to teach and guide her on her studies, since at home there is no one to help her.

Can anyone please recommend me a tuition centre or tutor in the west (She is staying at Bukit Batok), or if there is any other advise for me to do so I could do my best in helping her achieve her goals.

Thank you in advance 🙏🏻

Which subjects that she is weak? Remember, you will not be the only one who is feeling nervous. Many others will be nervous too. When you feel really nervous on the actual day, take deep breaths and count to 10. Then read each question carefully. Skip questions that you cannot do and MAKE SURE you return to them later.

Focus on the things that you CAN CONTROL. Eg. You can control HOW you spend your time before exam to revise.

You did not mention your score, so it is hard to give specific advice. Different score range ==> different strategy at this point of revision.

Look at the mistakes you have made so far. Try to learn from them. Get someone to explain to you if you still don't understand. That will give you more confidence. No need to do any more papers.

Since you are strong in languages, you probably do not need to revise tomorrow for English. You can consider spending today and tomorrow on Math.

All the best!!

manorway

Reply to All About Preparing For PSLE on Tue, 26 Sep 2023 00:16:07 GMT

00skyblue00\" post_id=\"2119534\" time=\"1695620067\" user_id=\"143605:

It may sound counter intuitive, do some light exercise like slow jog or cycling or swimming. I just learnt that it is not the mental activities that stimulate the brain most. 90% of brain stimulations come from physical activities. For students, some physical exercises will enhance their brain capacity for studying.

For seniors, that is the exact reason to stay physically active for better brain health.

bbbay

Reply to All About Preparing For PSLE on Mon, 25 Sep 2023 11:01:54 GMT

00skyblue00\" post_id=\"2119534\" time=\"1695620067\" user_id=\"143605:

It may sound counter intuitive, do some light exercise like slow jog or cycling or swimming.
