I have been teaching my son at home and he is quite advanced for his age. He will turn 3 next year and I am looking for a preschool that has a well established curriculum. Have checked out Kinderland at Sunshine Place, Montessori at Jurong Ext, Raffles Preschool at Turf City, Qdees at Yunnan and Pat’s at Arena. Quite like Pat’s Schoolhouse but unfortunately charges childcare fees. I am a secondary school teacher so I am aware of what makes a good curriculum. Are you a teacher too? Any recommendations?

Huskies

My kids have gone to private preschools, and what I noticed is that they would do rote learning later on in K1 and K2, such as writing letters and numbers.

In contrast, in the early years, there is emphasis on creativity, expression and abstract concepts. I’m not sure what is the pedagogy behind this, but I’m sure there are academic papers on why!

We used to send them to MFS but we felt that the curriculum was not as vigorous and might not prepare them well for Primary School. Within the last year, my older kid (K1) has learnt a lot and can read independent and do simple math. The school focuses on phonics from PG and builds on that foundation for English and even Mandarin. Founded by two Singaporean ladies, who started the GUG brand as an enrichment school. They only have a Thomson and Tampines branch. If you have questions, can private message me.

I was doing a search on Google and stumbled onto this thread… New member here…

I can’t seem to find the original post by Insider but that was many years back. The subject of this thread is exactly what I was searching for for my son who is in N2 now. However, the info on MOE website is very general and bare. The school director has also not provided parents with a set syllabus or curriculum even though i asked for this when enrolling my child. Understand it is not common for childcares to provide this to parents?

My son is in a private childcare in the East side and due to Covid-19, the school emailed the parents some worksheets for us to do with our children at home during the CB period. I noticed that my son is still learning to draw straight lines in N2. Of course the worksheets contain other activities too like counting, matching and reading an online story book and getting the child to express his feelings.

Was chatting with my colleague whose son is in a PCF childcare (also N2) and she is given letter C worksheet to practice writing. Apparently the children are learning to write the alphabets so I was concerned why my son is still not taught to write even letter A?? That’s what prompted my search on Google about the curriculum.

Based on my knowledge, my son is or has learned rote counting from 1-30, body parts, all shapes (like diamond oval etc) and can recognise A-Z and 1-30. They also learn all the days of the week in a song. This current term they are learning about occupations and transportations (eg. Nurse and doctor, fireman and fire engine etc)…

I understand that compared to western style teaching, many preschoolers are just only learning their ABCs and they emphasise alot on free play and learning through play (i guess we Singaporeans are just more kiasu). But without any clear guidelines from MOE, it is very difficult for us parents to gauge our child’s progress and how to support them.

So should i start teaching my son how to write letter A when his school has not reached that stage yet? I’m confused…

Any parents with N2 kids can share what your child is learning at the moment and at what progress? I am just thinking it is strange if PCF curriculum is faster or more advanced than private childcares because if that’s the case, i might as well enrol him in PCF and pay less school fees every month lol…

Sorry for the long post!

I went to a manpower recruitment agency that specialises in the preschool industry.

I told the recruiter I am keen to do curriculum writing and he warned me that the salary will be lower than a principal’s salary because the latter brings in revenue for the company but the former doesn’t.

I did my own homework by looking at job street. The recruiter was right. Some centres had very low expectations of a writer’s qualifications, they ask for a diploma qualification only for writer’s position.

I would think a writer need at least a bachelor degree in preschool education.

One new centre put the range of the writer’s salary as $3,500 maximum while the principal’s salary starts from $3,500.

Raising this for awareness, don’t be fooled by the centre’s claim of their so-called premium curriculum.

A curriculum writer must be able to see the big picture and align the centre’s philosophy with the contents while making room for differentiated learning. He must also have a solid knowledge of child development in addition to subject domain knowledge. And finally, be able to train the teachers who will be delivering the contents and make the necessary tweaks along the way. It is not an easy task. Definitely not any less easy than the principal’s job.

Most kids do not like Mandarin because the environment was not appropriately set for them. Exposure of Chinese must be done as early as possible. Not when they are in school, but way before that. Surveys have shown that children who are introduced to Chinese later, usually have a dislike for the language and will not score well even after spending a lot of money on tuition.

This is where I can help. I am dealing with a bilingual program that help parents create the required environment at home to build up the liking for Chinese in a fun and interactive way. Jean Piaget, one of the \"Giants\" in early childhood education, said there are 3 kinds of knowledge:
1. social knowledge - This refers to social conventional knowledge e.g. days of the week, names of colours and objects etc. This kind of knowledge requires 'telling' e.g. you tell the child the name of the flower (e.g. rose).

2. Physical and logical-mathematical: This kind of knowledge requires the learner to make connections in his mind and to be able to see relationships between concepts and ideas
An example is number concepts. Number concepts involve the following sub-concepts:
i. cardinality: That the last number counted represents the total number of objects
ii. one-to-one correspondence: This refers to matching of one word with one object in counting.
iii. conservation of number: This refers to an understanding that the number of objects do not change even though the objects are moved, rearranged or hidden.
iv. number sense and relationships: This refers to developing a sense of different quantities and the relationships between them e.g. 6 is 1 more than 5; I have 5 and I need 2 more to make 7 etc.

In order to develop all the above, children mus have varied experiences that involve the use of real objects over a long period of time.

Han Seo

Reply to Preschool Curriculum on Thu, 21 Mar 2013 17:11:16 GMT

iggy:
Phankao

I honestly dont know which version is the original.
