this batch of Sec 4 students (born in year 2007) was the last batch of students, who had sat for the GCE O level Economics subject, whose subject exam code 2286.

After this last batch have sat, TKGS (Tanjong Katong Girls’ Secondary school) subsequently then removed / offering teaching this O level Economics subject, from their school. That is, TKGS now (today) no longer offer O level Econs subject anymore, in Sec (3 & 4), from year 2024, onwards.

For those graduated Sec 4 students from the year 2023 O level batch -

who have then proceeded onwards, forward into their Junior Colleges, to prepare for their next year (2025) A level, note that :-

taken O level Econs did provide only the very basic, core fundamental foundation. However, it is barely enough !
There is still a very huge, wide jump (gap) in subject content taught, between
Economics (GCE O level vs. GCE A level H2 Economics).

As such,
the feedback coming from some of the current A-level JC Econs lecturers, teaching H2 Econs subject, in the Junior Colleges -

after the year end October / November Moe school Term 4 JC (1) “promo” exam into the nextJC (2) level, the feedback from JC Econs lecturers, was that :-

some students still did badly (poorly) in their H2 Econs subject, even though they had sat for GCE O level Econs subject (2286), before.

The only caveat to this (brought up by others elsewhere) is two humanities make sense if both could be A1 - C6 (for example) with equal probability. If one is 75%-90% chance of A1 (or whatever) and the other one is more likely than not to be at B4 (or whatever) or below, then one is probably wasting his/her time with the second humanities. Unless you just want the practice to try and improve.

If Economics is only offered to triple science students, it makes sense that demand for it would have waned. In a triple science combo, there are many subjects that can fit comfortably into the R4 and R5 slots, and provide better synergies with the other subjects compared to Economics, such as: A Math and E Math, Chemistry and Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Physics and A Maths.

If your mother tongue is of a reasonable standard (A1 or A2), that would probably take up one of the R4 or R5 slot, leaving only one last slot for another subject. Unless the intention is to stack subjects so that one can score 9 or 10 A1s, Economics as the odd subject in the 8+1 combination doesn't offer any benefit and serves no practical purpose. Once you start strategising and working for either the L1R5 or L1R2B2 points, Economics deficiency (as a subject offering) becomes very obvious.

Not saying it is good or bad to remove Economics. The two Econ classes were Triple Science + SS/Elective Hist/Geo/Lit + Econs (9 subjects). Per prior discussion, absent MSP/CSP/BI these kids would be forced to put the SS + Elective Hist/Geo/Lit in the R1 slot. Maybe there is support for Econs but something else was deemed more beneficial? Who knows.

There are other triple science classes where the kids only have SS/Elective Hist/Geo/Lit for the R1 slot (8 subjects). So this challenge still exists (to the extent it is a challenge, it may or may not be).

My DD is an existing Sec3 Econs student in TKGS and there are 2 classes taking Econs this year which is the highest intake compared to previous years. So it is really hard to understand the reason for removing Econs as a subject.
