When my girl went for her 1st lesson, the teacher didnt teach her much things & went straight into making her sit for Compo Test for 50min. Teacher was only time-keeping, which is what I can do myself at home.

It is poor usage of paid lesson time; I suggested letting my girl do it as hw so that teacher can add more value by teaching my girl how to improve compo during lesson. I said going through their mistakes will be more helpful.
Mgr kept folding his arms & refused to listen, saying this has been their practice for many yrs. They don’t realise times has changed since the Pandemic. Can u imagine u pay a tutor to just watch your kid take test over Zoom? Its ridiculous!
They also rejected my suggestion of arrange the tests on non-lesson days, free up the Teacher’s time to do what we pay her for: to teach students. The Branch Mgr made this exaggerated claim - no tuition centre does that! He thot he’s talking to an inexperienced mom. I told him that Kent Ridge Tuition Centre does arranges that!

He was very rude & made personal attack, said very loudly pointing his finger at me, "8 other parents never complain! You’re too PICKY!" I told him that his conduct was unprofessional here as he should not be making personal attack when i was making suggestions. He insisted loudly again he’s not wrong & even encouraged me to withdraw, "If you’re not happy, please withdraw & go to another tuition centre!" He’s the rudest staff whom I have ever seen.When I asked to talk to his boss, they pretended they don’t know his contact no.

May I clarify when u said HCL good is referring to General Chinese or Composition class?
If a student starts in HCL class(not compo) for P1and then transit to Elite class in p3, will they be able to catch up with composition writing skills? Thank you.

Hi, personally I do not think there is much difference between the popular Chinese enrichment centers (HCL, Jiang, Wang ...). Will be better if you choose a particular tuition teacher of any of these centers based on word-of-mouth from friends, relatives, schoolmates, ....

HCL offers COC (Compo, Oral, Compre) classes so it seems to suit what you are looking for (not sure whether other centers offer regular Compo/Oral classes).

Maybe ask around classmates to see where they are attending? You can get the feedback from them on the materials, teacher, ....

Do check with your kid after his initial lessons to get his feedback too.

At the meantime, if the school resources are good, you can consider coaching your kid until you have found a suitable center.

You refering to primary school ?

Can ask the counter admin girl (Busybee) to show u a sample of their model answers zuowen, compare it against another model answer sample zuowen from (Wang laoshi or HCL) centre, u can tell the difference quickly, in terms of the degree of \"chimness\" at Busybee, vs. the other two
centre(s).

Compare the model answers zuowen for (P3 to P6) between Busybee vs. Wang / HCL only,
not ask u to compare the \" li jie Wen da \" comprehension questions, that part.
You can visit any Busybee branch, closest to your house, say you would like to take a look, at the sample zuowen.

For the li jie Wen da (primary school), u must ask the staff Teacher there : how they teach Compreh ?

Is it

a) did laoshi ask the kids to copy down answers from the white board ?

Or

b) did laoshi just give the answers to class verbally, but never write down anything on the white board ?

Or

c) did laoshi really teach students the technique (skill behind, zhi qiao) in answering Comprehension ( li jie wen da) question by question ? If got teach technique, then is very good !

If is just copy down model answer from the white board, then no use lah.

For the Secondary school section -

When go to Secondary 1, the difference is not that much.
Frankly, for the Secondary school section,
I find Wang laoshi Chinese worksheets \"so-so\" only.

I mean, every week,
those first few pages found inside Wang laoshi handout -

on \"geng zhe ke wen zhou\" that part, I mean,
surely, one can easily get similar content from those Sec 1 \"shou che\" Chinese vocab books sold in Popular book shop, right ? You don't need to pay so much $ to a tuition centre, just to print out similar content.

Upper P5 & P6 (HCL) worksheets content are much easier.

P5 & P6 (Wang laoshi) worksheets content are harder, compared to HCL.

But, P5 & P6 (Busybee) worksheets content, the hardest.

If a kid's Chinese standard is poor, should not go Busybee
Anyone has some examples of content to share to illustrate what it means by HCL is not as hard as WLS and that BB is hardest please? My friend is trying to decide too. But we are also not sure what is more suitable. Child scores over 90% for in P3 and P4 but parents think the child is just slightly above average. Kid is attentive but probably won't revise on his own. All centres give many pages of lesson notes/worksheets, right? Then if a child does not revise, a thick set of lesson notes may not make much difference, right?
