Sometimes exercises are self-marked or peer-marked (Peer marking is also a very helpful learning process for students). Other times, teacher focus-marks (targets at particular group of errors only) or marks for assessment. But ALL class work or home work WILL be taught, explained and gone through with students.

Exceptional cases are near exam period when I want students to practice writing or compre papers. Then I’ll issue the answer scripts for students to self check. Students will approach me if they need to clarify things. If not it’ll take a very long time to return all the marked scripts. And from what I see, many students are not concerned about the mistakes they make or making sure they don’t make the same mistakes. They just want to know how many marks they get, and then chuck the papers aside.

My girl in IP school, for chinese, the teacher random pick a few student’s work from the class to review and comment. For Math, the teacher would pick the difficult ones, ask the class to give the answser. And if the answer is wrong, he would tell the class to discuss (openly) the solutions. Bascially he also does not mark. For language art, they would do presentation of their homework in class, also no marking by teacher. Is this common in sec school ?

zann, your child is in IP or non IP ?
