There is no specific rule to it, you just have to be exposed to as many of them as possible and memorise them.<br /><br />(1) put in usually goes with effort<br />You have to put in effort to get results<br /><br />(2) put up can have a few meanings<br />(a) put up can mean to erect<br />eg. put up a sign<br />(b) put up can also mean to stay<br />eg. I have to put up in a motel because it has turned dark.<br />(c) put up can also mean to bear with someone/something<br />eg. I have to put up with your nonsense all these years because I am married to you.<br /><br />(3) put forth is to suggest something for consideration<br />eg. put forth a plan or recommendation<br /><br />(4) put through is to make someone go through an experience, usually a tough/difficult one<br />eg. The contestants were put through many rounds of grueling tests before a victor emerged.<br /><br />So there is no ambiguity.
