WHY is PSLE so important?
A good PSLE score opens doors to a good schools ( dream schools, schools of choice)

What is the significance of it?
A good school leads often to better environment and learning leading to hopefully better prospects in life.

What is PSLE all about?
It is about insense pressure felt from schools and peers by both the child and parents. :scared:
It is about worying that child too sensitive abt results or about child doesnt care about results. :stupid:
It is about parents panicking - what else should i do, am i doing enough? :nailbite:
It is about becoming paranoid about what could go wrong from fever to fractures
It is about greying hair , and aging 5 years in P6 ( for parent(s)) :frustrated:
And Lastly, it is about wanting to fight the system but not having time for it , and finally succumbing to ways to beat the system. :rant:

Why ppl so kancheong about it?
Parents worry about the losing a great oppertunity to make it good in life.
PSLE score often gets treated as a social status - children get defined by this. And so do their parents and siblings.

NJC's one reminds me of the military because of the silver buttons.

HCI also got buttons leh.

Gray is one of my favorite colour.

Anyway, if I am not mistaken, NJC gray coloured uniform has a reason, sth like being a national JC to be neutral.

The PSLE is the \"new O levels\", where the top 5% to 10% of students in the PSLE go on to do the Integrated Program which provides an almost assured chance to get into the affiliated top Junior Colleges. That's why PSLE is so important. Miss this important PSLE opportunity, the O levels taking student subsequently needs to get 2 pt to 3pt for L1R5 (6 subjects) in order to get to the top Junior Colleges.

My friend was asked this question and the question was thrown to me, and now I shall throw this over to the forumers here :

WHY is PSLE so important? What is the significance of it? What is PSLE all about? Why ppl so kancheong about it? Well, these are the exact questions thrown to me

Seriously, I have never thought of this until Ive been asked, although I also have a child taking PSLE this year :oops:

But I think it is good to know, and we can share it with our children too. So I guess I still got to thank my friend's child who asked her about this.

Having a DD who completed her PSLE last year, now I realise why the fuss over this first national exam taken by school going kids.


My DD, together with her 2 cousins, took their PSLE last year and the 3 of them got very different results. DD and another cousin, who were ranked higher in terms of PSLE t-score, were given their first choice secondary schools which are quite popular in Singapore. The remaining cousin, though still qualified for Express stream, was posted her 4th choice school. On Reporting Day (23 Dec 2010), when this cousin went her new class in the secondary school, she realised that she's the only Chinese student in her class. Her parents took a look at the school environment and noticed that the school is plagued with student discipline issues. The parents also received a lot of negative feedback about the students from this school from friends and neighbours (smoking in the park while still in school uniform, fighting and rowdiness in shopping malls, food courts). After much thought, the parents decided to withdraw their DD from the school.

In essence, P6 kids who are ranked higher for the PSLE t-score will have more secondary school choices. Generally, secondary schools with better school environment are very popular and have higher cut-off points. It also translates to that if your child qualifies for such schools, he/she will have a more conducive environment for learning and lesser chance of discipline problems during the teenage years. For the parents, this means lesser headaches (NOT no headache)!

Good thing the parents managed to find another school for the kid. Yes, the teenage years are very important, as friends they make at this age are ones they keep for a long time.

so for those kids whose results are not so good, their parents chose to let them go into a good sec school's normal stream then to express stream of schools' with disciplinary problems...
that's what happen to my niece and she is very happy in the 'much better' school studying in the normal stream..
