I bought 四五快读 and I can barely finish the first book with my kid (4yr old) :oops: , I flash and read the cards and explain the how to use the words in a sentence.

How do you use the series? Perhaps can share a few tips and I can learn 🙂 :?:

I thought 四五快读 is for 3-6yrs old cos that what I seen at the seller website n I bought it. My son is 4 yrs old now and when I started on book 1 there are at least more than 50% off the words he alr know in every chapter. It’s quite surprising you said it’s for P3 standard. I think book 1 was a breeze to him but book 2 getting abit harder but since it’s for older kids then I can understand why.

Those who had started SWKD on their kids do you move to the next chapter only after you kids can recognised all the words you had taught? Im still at chapter 2 abit slow cos no time. Normally I spent 1hr reading with my son can be either english or chinese. Recently he is into the english readers I bought for him so had did SWKD on and off. Normally I do 2 chapters with him cos some of the words he alr know how to read. At what age is SWKD suitable for? I din know there is ESKD.


I normally will depends on % of words kids are familiar with, if ~50%, i will continue with current chapter, if >75% they can recognise, i will move on to the next chapter, but keep on revising the words that they are not familiar with.
This set is meant for 5-6 yrs old kids in China context, but according to some parents, it is equivalent to P3 standard in SG.

After the child is interested in learning then it is much easier to progress to 四五 as this series doesn’t have as much pictures so in a way less interesting unless the parent knows how to make examples and make Chinese learning fun ! 加油啦！


Btw we are done with the 二三快读 and happy to let go.

You must be a Stay at Home Mum to be your son's Tutor, GTGT?

Otherwise, there's a need to outsource some coaching to non-mum tutors. Alas, full time working dads and mums do not have the luxury of time to coach during office hours.

Additionally, the mum who acts as the child's tutor must be qualified. If one's own languages or math/science cannot make it, no matter how good the guide books are won't help much. 😓
I am actually a FTWM till last month and I do not have a maid as well 🙂

I usually just spent 10 mins per day on 四五快读。

Quantity is not the issue. Quality matters. I find that consistent teaching is very important. It is better to spend just 20 mins per day than a weekly 2 hours tuition.

I actually got to know about this kind of coaching through my boy's piano lessons. Piano teacher will always encourage students to practise daily. It may be a short 20mins daily practice but it helps a lot in his music development. You cannot progress fast with weekly lessons only.[/quote]

OK I see. I agree on your \"practice makes perfect\" mantra, especially with regard to music and competitive sports. I guess in addition to confidence, perseverance and patience, mommy needs to be reasonably well-versed in Mandarin to be able to use these materials correctly. There are some teachers' instructions inside. I'm of the opinion that not every working parent has the bandwidth to do this in quality bite sizes after office hours daily, particularly if the children are in morning session!

The enrichment centres exist for a reason because they know:

1. some stay-at-home/working moms and dads are not academically inclined to self-coach. Check your/spouse's own PSLE, GCE results before you take up the tutor job! :shock:
2. some working parents work long hours and do not have the time to self-coach.
3. some parents simply aren't born to teach. they can only be a caregiver, a cook, a driver, a playmate to their children. compatibility matters!
4. some working parents believe outsourcing to enrichment centres enables them to know the \"industry standards\", techniques and strategies, and national benchmark. The school benchmark isn't enough for them.
5. some working parents have a lot more industry skills (and tests) to acquire at work, so cannot find time to \"go-back-to-school\" to learn model drawing, hypy and creative writing techniques. :rotflmao:
6. some families badly need double income, hence they cannot afford 1 parent to be a jobless tutor for their children. 😓
7. some children come from non-Chinese speaking families.

Your child is blessed to have a learned parent like you! But I feel that not every student is blessed with an academically qualified and patient \"parentocrat\" who can afford to quit his/her job to be a home tutor to curate the right materials/books/assessment books, make useful notes and supervise his/her learning.

Yes, all parents should try. Sometimes, I wonder how long this can be sustained 😞 All these are manageable for FTWMs from preschool to lower pri. But for how long? Up till P6, P3, Sec 4? There'll come a time when we parents find ourselves inadequate and succumb to the dreaded \"External Tuition\" eventually.

You've curated the right resources, as those are the same readers, assessment books and materials I've at home too. Haha! In fact, mine has completed some of the assessment books (VT, TJZW, TWW, GMT) you posted, under my tigress guidance:) I also have D Walliams books at home, though he is an LGBT author (\"The Boy in the Dress\").

I follow a former ST education journalist's blog. She was a strong advocate of zero tuition in lower pri like you. But when her DS was in P3, she succumbed to tuition as she realised she could not coach zuowen herself.

But i will make sure that i will go thru with them on school work (spelling & Ting Xie) & their enrichment materials.

I have taught my elder one started from er san kuai du till now 四五快读, i only spent max 20 mins every night on this, sacrificing my time for TV (no TV on weekday) & time for surf net & mobile phones.
For some of the words i am not too sure how to pronounce, i downloaded few apps that will help me to pronounce chinese words the words correctly. FYI, my mandarin only up till primary level.
For HYPY, i bought used Berries products.

I am not trying to penalize other parents for not doing so or trying to show off, but we are trying to share what we are doing, at the same time to encourage each others in the process of couching our kids.
