<![CDATA[about &quot;ask me your burning maths questions&quot; topic]]>Is anyone out there shocked by the kind of maths questions that get posted in Primary schools: \"tutor maths guru: ask me your burning maths questions\" topic.

While most of them are probably PSLE type questions, some of the questions are so difficult that I suspect they are either Maths Olympiad questions or from some maths competition.

Are these really Primary school maths meant for the mainstream kids? I actually recognise a question which is very similar to the last question in the GEP Maths paper (i.e. the most difficult question). The GEP maths paper is meant to be more difficult than the mainstream paper, if that is so, why are we stressing our ordinary kids who may not be so gifted with maths with such difficult questions.

I think some parents will be worried that if these are really PSLE-type questions, they may drive their kids to practise these type of questions. We will be adding unnecessary stress to the kids.

Would it help if we split up the topic back into \"Q&A - PSLE Maths\" vs \"Other maths questions for fun ? \" or something like that. For those who are posting under the latter, they could either state where the questions came from or at least assure other parents that these are not PSLE questions.

I'm rambling ... probably not workable solution ... or probably these are really PSLE type quesions :shock:
Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

I meant, what if a confident kid saw one of these questions at the start of this paper and panicked??? Every question thereafter feels like a trick question already, even though it might be straightforward actually. :yikes:

I think your DH meant for you to buy P3 - P6 Maths books to study. If you \"jump\" direct to P6 Maths book, can't say for sure you can understand what is there in the P6 book. A lot of the school syllabus are different from our time, and we really need to \"re-learn\" before we can even teach (for most subjects in fact, not only Maths).

I stopped trying to understand the maths questions posted there after reading a few sentences of the 1st question..lol


I rmbed that the easy questions are mostly at the first few pages and it gets tougher at the back. But just in case I missed easy questions behind, I always scan through the whole exam paper before doing. Just in case. Well, was tricked once.

SO, tip to your DDs: Scan through the whole paper before you start doing! 🙂

It is true that a number of those questions in the Maths Guru thread are olympiad-type questions, but equally true that others posted there are fair game for PSLE.
If you want pure PSLE questions, stick to the PSLE Maths thread. Actually, it is not much better there either :scared: .

Chief, I won't say I live in ignorance for past years and only to wake up this year when ds in taking his PSLE this year.......but joining this forum only beginning of this year does give me Heads Up and live in more Reality when so many helpful parents are here to share their experiences which at times, can be really s-c-a-r-y ....

So, just do his best![/quote]Though everyone in the cohort sits the same paper, the difficulty level of the math paper will affect the students' competitive advantage. Eg. for a simple paper, the student who is more careful will get better score. For a difficult paper, the student who have practised more types of 'difficult questions' has a better chance of a A*, more exposure what... :evil:

U are not alone. I have 2011 and 2013 PSLE boys. Am I going to be worse off :imdrowning:[/quote]Maybe better off. When paper is tough, mean will be lower. So if your kid did above average on a lower mean, T-score will be higher. Easy paper does not mean high T-score.

The only difference is the \"feel-good\" factor after the paper - difficult paper made parents and kids 😓 and worried till results time!
