Hello! Wondering which parents here give their child a handphone, which parents don't, and why?

My son has a phone of his own. Pros and cons. My only regret is that I should have given him a prepaid phone. He's spending time watching cartoons on you tube rather than spending time on his books. Anyone has any idea how to stop his addiction? :?: I'm so worried .... If I'm to cancel his line, he would be mad at me. If I don't cancel, his addiction will grow.. What should I do?? :stupid:

May I know what band grades are consider good enough to keep third Lang. I see my son third Lang results keep slipping. But he said lesson fun... excluding exams and homework.

I am not sure what grade is good enough... But as you said your son likes 3rd lang :imcool: I think that's a good reason to continue! Can always withdraw at end of sec 3 / start of sec 4.

my DD's 3rd lang result is always at borderline, and she said its fun so we thot like good to keep continue and not necessary to aim a very good grade. but i heard there is min band grade for continuing 3rd lang in JC, is that true ? thank you

Sorry Mumflower I don't remember / know of the min grade to continue in JC! I tried to google, but no avail too.. Maybe can ask 3rd lang teacher?

Haha…it’s very admirable to do a third language and persist with it! So bravo to the kids who do!

For my DS1 we decided together to not take third lang in the first place as he had his heart set on a super time intensive CCA. In a way that kind of leaves us with less of a dilemma now although I do have some regrets about the decision…being a ‘languages’ kinda guy he may have enjoyed it…

It is an 'extra' subject in dd's school. Meaning 3rd language students will be taking 10 subjects in Sec 3 :nailbite: Those without 3rd lang will be taking 9 subjects.

The way I see it, interests aside, the only benefit of 3rd lang is its grade can be used to replace another non core subject if 3rd lang result is better than other non core subject.

I feel that there are already so many compulsory subjects to handle. Hence, I insisted dd to drop 3rd lang after 1 semester and put her time where it really matters.

Ds1 prefers physics too.

My DS seems the humanities sort but he knows very well (as do probably most students out there) that in Science it is easier to score better marks. However we have discussed this and I have told him he must do what his heart tells him and what he enjoys rather than choose subjects based on the ability score.The latter goes against our value of studying to learn rather than studying to score.

Oh and by the way Chem is compulsory in his school. So it’s either Chem/Bio or Chem/Physics if he chooses double Science. I just cannot imagine him enjoying the latter. I did triple science in from sec 3 to A levels and found Physics painful. Give me English Lit any day!

Hello - I love this thread ( thanks Champion) and glad it's back up & running.

My 2002 DS - has always had own plan since P6. Data only 1MB until end of sec1 and never exceeded except once ...yay! Now has 1GB data cos he does need it for his various official (school-related) chat groups. I just looked at his whatsapp just now - last seen 7.40am...I'm happy This guy I can trust...

Subject combination- very confused so much varying advice. In his school no arts stream, so now just have to decide triple science/single humanitites or double science/double humanities. He's definitely taking Lit . Now the concern if he takes 2 humanities is which 2. Some say Hist/Lit very content heavy but he's not so good in Geog And no music or 3rd language to fall back on.

The school also allows triple science/double humanities but I strongly discouraging him from that. I think it would be so very painful what with all his other commitments.

Any advice on subject combi appreciated!

I took 3 sciences + geog + both A math and E math.

More science if: logic thinking
More humans (double humans) if: good grasp of writing. If dd or ds hates / dislikes writing essays of different lengths then this is not for them!

Both science and humans need memory work, so hope yall don't have misconception that humanities require more memorising than sciences.

Yeap physics O level is needed if you want to take physics in JC. In engineering courses (uni), physics > chemistry > biology meaning physics has been the most helpful to me, bio the least useful.

Phy - logic thinking, goes together with math
Bio - memory work + understanding
Chem - memory work + understanding
Geog - human geography I disliked, physical geography I liked!

Personally I disliked chem so much, that I almost took double science double humanities just to avoid chemistry.
But in sec 4 it got better because I began to understand it. Lab was also fun! There is much to memorise for chemistry, so I just learn to accept it and put in effort to remember all the reactions.

Eventually in JC i took physics + chemistry, rather than bio. I am stronger in math and sciences, writing essays I keep working on it.

3 science 2 humans is difficult to juggle. Rather have CCA leadership and strong set of subjects than 1 extra humanities (or science) subject.

Is advanced humanities a subject or do you mean choosing one of the the humanities like advanced literature?

If I read correctly from the info I got, the class not doing triple science has to Humanities in advanced mode. not that his Humanities is great but he is not very keen in one of the sciences.

Chem and integrated humanities are compulsory but she cannot decide whether to take physics or advanced literature or history.
Understand that if u don't take physics in upper sec, u won't be able to take it in JC.
