Got reminded of this book while tidying up the room. This pictionary is aligned with the Primary 1 syllabus and includes word recognition (up to 300 words over 19 units) and theme-related oral practices & conversation exercises. Suitable for Pri 1 & 2 students. A bit pricey ($16.90) but value for money imo.

Wawayaya is fantastic! We've been using the app for >1year. Our (SAP) primary school subscribes to it (but I'm not certain yet whether it's paid for, partially subsidised, or etcetera). We also receive 新天地 (by ezhishi) hardcopies from school.

Hi Gie2,

Your child would have access to audio books/ebooks which are endorsed by MOE inside the ezhishi portal.

The school also subscribes to Dudu portal for the kids.

Just drop an email to the Chinese teacher if u don’t have the login details pasted in the child’s pupils companion. I’m sure the teacher will be happy to help u with the links.

My girl in K2 now. Been sending her to a tuition centre in Clementi for K2 Hanyu Pinyin as I simply cannot teach.. and also forgotten.. not too sure if I have even learnt it during my time. Result is... she likes it! The laoshi teaches in fun ways through songs and rhymes. After a few lessons, she is singing away in Chinese and reciting some cute rhymes. good enough for me!

I send my kids here. The focus is on getting the kids to enjoy learning and standard is high but not crazy hard. They don’t charge extra for the coloured booklets btw. Hope this info helps.

Why would I want to pay extra for coloured worksheets? Substance is more important than form.

And why would I want to spend 2 hrs waiting for my kid to play tangram and pick up sticks during his / her HCL tuition class? That's a luxury I cannot afford. Besides, these traditional games should've been played during their preschool years, not in P1.

Or, do such Chinese cultural activities during the school holidays, say as part of your holiday bootcamp like Tien Hsia always does, not during your regular weekly lessons.

PS: I did something like this for my dc's kindy project before; coincidentally also 中国传统游戏 (theme given by kindy CL teacher). So, in other words, parents can DIY at home themselves. No need to spend money to let others teach dc extracurricular cultural immersion stuffs.

Zeit, maybe some parents are like me, looking for enrichment rather than tuition. Where did u get the tangrams picture? Their Facebook? Funny I didn’t see that.

I went to their website and only saw some sample video clip that is being used for the kids’ Chinese oral exam practice. Which led me to think that the centre is only about teaching exam smarts.

I seriously am looking for a place where the kids will learn fun things in a Chinese-speaking environment. When I do that at home, I cannot replicate a classroom setting since I only have one child. He needs a group lesson setting to be forced into immersion. Maybe Zeit you are willing to share your home-made materials or start a peer group Chinese group setting? PM me if u are keen. Thank u!

Came across this book today. The content is good for strengthening the kids' understanding of the nouns and verbs learnt from the syllabus text as well as practicing their oral skills from sentence structures that they are introduced to via the text book. Slightly pricey though (around $16+), but can be used even for P2s as a form of revision.

She has proven records of helping weaker students to sustain their interest in the language and at the same time pull their results up. She is an experienced preschool and primary school tutor. I was her student in primary school and my Chinese improved a lot since I met her. Wasn’t a straight A student before I met her but subsequently achieved A* for Chinese and Distinction for HCL. I developed an interest in Chinese Writing and entered Dunman High School. Thanks to her I managed to found my Forte in languages and took up H2 Translation (Chinese) for A level. Currently awaiting results and wish to continue to offer tuition for primary school students(I was a student tutor for 3 years before I decided to take a break for A levels).

Chinese is not a difficult language to learn and the most important part in to build the confidence in children so that they stay interested in the language and will be capable of doing well in the subject.

There are two section s of stories per chapter in a Chinese textbook. For my son’s who used to be in enrichment-streamed Chinese class, they also learn the enrichment section ( 深广)stories. It appeared that initially all classes learned all sections then the teacher will monitor how they cope and how fast they learn as enrichment sect is not necessary to learn the 识读 and 识写字。all classes take same school exam Chinese version paper (not talking aboutt foundation CL in p5-6 here). This was for my son’s sch. It be best to check out from parents in your dd school instead.

Different primary schools operate differently, for Chinese / Higher Chinese.

Suggest that you speak directly to your child’s Chinese Hod, clarify all your doubts. Why don’t you give a call to your Chinese Hod, instead ?

Hi mummies and daddies

My DD is in P1 this year. Recently, I found out that in her school, the children were streamed based on their chinese results in SA1 & teacher’s observation into different chinese classes. Is this the normal practice in all primary schools?

I read from the internet and suspect that the streaming is meant stream/band students into 3 categories: enrichment, core and bridging. Does all 3 streams take the same exam papers and eventually learn the same thing? If so, then what is the difference for each of the stream? How would I know which stream is my DD in if the teachers say they can’t tell us? I think she is either core or enrichment.

Also, the school is a new neighbourhood school. Not a SAP school. But it uses higher chinese textbook. Does the use of higher chinese textbook mean that higher chinese is offered in the school? Or it just means the school uses higher chinese materials and does not mean higher chinese is offered? Coz I thought only SAP primary schools offer higher chinese from P1? Or there is no such thing as higher chinese in P1 to P4 as the real higher chinese is only offered from P5 onwards?

Also, what is then the difference between "enrichment" stream and higher chinese?
