Hi fellow parents,

Anyone has any tips on how to improve child's composition writing? So far my child is not doing well in both situational and compo writing...Stuck at AL5..
To improve composition writing, the simplest way is to enhance creativity. I know there are those that focus on rote learning to master the mechanics of it all, but that process is BORING, and I pity the kids who have to go through the process.

In any case, the only way to enhance creativity is to encourage reading voraciously. Let your kid read the newspapers, comics, novels, etc. Anything that appeals to their fancies. Even better, read WITH them and be involved in their journey of discovery, so that you become a sounding board for them when you discuss the stories together. That will trigger critical thinking.

Why is 'rarely' considered 'negative'? I thought rarely, similar to frequently, usually, sometimes, occasionally..., is merely a measure of frequency. If we replace 'rarely' by 'sometimes' in the question, would the answer be 'do' or 'don't'?

This question is a 'question tag' type of question. If the statement is negative, the tag must be positive. If the statement is positive, the tag must be negative. In this case the word 'rarely' shows that the above statement is negative. The tense of the tag is determined by the tense of the auxiliary/modal verb of the statement that precedes it. If the statement does not use an auxiliary/modal (i.e. it is in the present or past simple tense and you don’t see words such as do, does, did, am, is, are, has, have, had or can, could, may, might, must, ought, should, and would, then the auxiliary to do must be used) Since this question does not use a auxiliary, the correct answer will be 'do'.

The new syllabus oral is meant to assess candidates on their ability to give a personal and relevant respond. Some tips would be for students to (1) remember the main topic at hand; (2) use the visual stimulus (pictures) to look for clues on how they can respond; and (3) draw a relevance between the main topic and the visual stimulus to answer the prompts (questions asked by the examiner). The syllabus can be retrieved from the MOE website as well.

We are running a preparation class for P5 students who will be taking the PSLE examinations in 2017, where we will be covering Oral as part of the 5-session holiday programme. Do PM me if you would like to know more!
