For classical music, Encore Book 2 and 3 provide popular past year Grade 3-4 and 5-6 exam set by ABRSM previously. There is also Best of Grade 1-5 Series and Keynotes by Faber Music. For more fun sounding pieces, try Bewitched and Dinosaurs by Faber Music.

Decision on technical pieces should be left to the teacher as the teacher must know how to play and teach them, but there is this excellent book Hello Mr Gillock! The child is not mature enough yet to troubleshoot mistakes by himself/herself, so if you leave your DD to practice by herself, she most likely will accomplish very little by herself and not much progress would be made.

Plenty of children start piano lessons when they are in P1. If they progress an average of one grade per year, they will still end up taking grade 8 by around sec 2 or sec 3, which is perfectly normal. If your goal is for your DD to join the competitive circuit, then maybe it's advisable to start as early as possible with a very good teacher immediately.

Dreamaurora

Reply to Teacher Dreamaurora - Piano Q&A on Mon, 06 Jun 2016 03:07:12 GMT

Hi Teacher Dreamaurora,

I have some questions in my mind pondering for very long and think i should post and seek your guidance:

My 4 YO girl started with a music school learning piano when she was 18 months. Though perhaps in the future if there is a student keen on winning prizes, I may consider giving double lessons.

The frequency of the lessons and the amount of practice I think really depends on what kind of results being desired and also the level of independence of the student. There are also other factors such as the expected length of preparation and parental support.

But generally for a comfortable progression of average one grade per year with good merit/distinction result, I recommend hourly weekly lessons coupled with 20 min practice + Grade * 5 mins per day. If faster progress is desired then of course need more practice and lessons. I prepared my grade 8 within 6 months, but I remembered practicing average of 3 hours a day for it. For most local students I think even maintaining an average of 30-45 mins a day is a challenge, so I don't recommend accelerating through the grades if they can't commit to more practice.

Dreamaurora

Reply to Teacher Dreamaurora - Piano Q&A on Thu, 28 Apr 2016 06:05:27 GMT

Dreamaurora:
Also, piano teachers teach one to one rather than group like ballet. By the time the student register, should be able to play through the pieces and most of the scales. The remaining months are spent polishing up. So really, if this guideline is followed, there is no need for additional lessons over many months leading towards the exam. Though if necessary I may request one or two extra lessons near the exam date.

Also, piano teachers teach one to one rather than group like ballet.
