Did anyone familiar with JSA ?

My son is now in P4 and he has been trained in Wushu for about a year. He is talented on this sport. He had also participated and score quite well. Unfortunately, his school does not have Wushu as CCA and I would not want to miss his chance to join JSA.

Anyone can advise ?

It is always full class regardless of sport, so just go with your child's interest.
Personally known of someone who picked up table tennis during JC 1 & represented school team in NSG.

Just remember this JSA program is learn for fun only. Can’t expect any leg up for DSA but maybe only Sports School will have some unofficial scouts looking out for potentials.

It was crazy. Long long wait. Supposed to be 2.5 hrs event, ended to be a 4.5 hrs.

Long queue, and so many parents where waiting outside, loitering around, sitting on the staircase or on the grass patches not knowing what time will the kids be released.

Kids were tired after the selection, not because of the physical activity but by the long wait and doing nothing.

No harm going for the trial first then decide.
My DS was in the program before COVID & enjoyed it. Learnt a new sport every semester, total 4. Trainings on Sat at external venues, depending on the sport.

Thanks. So I guess the trials for the incoming batch of candidates will probably be postponed, cos no point taking in candidates now when there’s no training starting soon.[/quote]Yes, as it's usually conducted in Sports Hub which is an external venue.

This year’s batch already went, if im not wrong… child’s coach/ sch shared info if keen.


Actually for JSA, they won’t encourage u to pick the sport that ur child is currently already learning or playing for sch. Serves as exposure to other sports… the speed at which children learn the sport at JSA level is much slower than one who is already expert in it. That’s also valid concern unless u wana make ur child stand out… then it might work but still have to make sure ur child’s JSA coach is the right audience to target.

Basics r taught to kids, not advanced skills… speed of the course may also depend on the cohort progress. If 1 particular child stands out v well, then coach might invite child to dsa to sports schs or recommend certain schs that r strong in them.


To get into Singapore youth team, my understanding is the kids have to b older instead of pri sch? Probably depends on what sport it is. Majority of the sports accept students into youth team at an older age.

If u r referring to using JSA in future, then probably might not b any use too coz they will v much look at talent instead of JSA background.

It’s like a mini sport sponsorship for 2.5yrs to experience various sports and see what the kid is keen to pursue in secondary sch.

For us, this is free exposure to learn different sports. Bowling, shooting, flippa ball, fencing and sailing are offered and some of these sports are expensive sports that not everyone has the opportunity and resource to take part in. We want our kids to like learning and it should include learning new sports. Go for the trial and see if you get the chance explore new sports.

It is just a way of casting their nets far and wide to hunt for general sports talent. Or actually, hunt for those kids who have general all-round sporting ability, but their primary school happened not to have enough resources to develop them further. Eg no sports CCA slot for them, or no money to organize internal Sports Day, etc etc.

Not sure why your child received the letter if he’s not sporty. If u think it’s a waste of his time then skip it. No big loss. I think only those parents who cannot afford to send their sporty kids for external private sports coaching, they would benefit the most. Even then, it needs either the parent to ferry the kid there for the Saturday training, or the child must want it badly enough to take public transport there.

Maybe it’s a nationwide plan to find the next potential Beckham, I dunno. It’s quite dubious they can really dig up a sports diamond in the rough within a 10-week stint at a new sport.
This sounds right. Also after trying so many different sports it might put off your child entirely and start to dislike activities. I feel trying a sport 2 to 3 times is enough for them to know whether they like it or not!

If your child is athletic, keep them healthy and fit... I believe if they keep working on the conditioning and attitude they can quickly pick up any sport they are interested in...
