My kids attended the camp for the first time this year. Both have enjoyed it very much and already wanted to "re-camp" next year.
I would like to share these information with new parents who want to find out more.
It is based on one of my Lower Primary Kid notes from the Camp and the little experiments which they brought home.
Excursions
1) 2 excursions on 2 mornings; Park (West Coast/Labrador) & Science Center.
Some of the Experiments to teach the Concepts include:
1) Growing of Seeds - on Germination
2) Sound waves
3) Play at Park - to illustrate the Energy and Gravity forces
4) Colours - mixing of primary colours & its outcome
5) Forming of Shadows -
I think the approach is commendable. Science should be \"experienced\". It is better learned that way.
My P4 and P6 sons tells me that in a normal academic year in school. They only visit their school science lab a hand full of occasions and only conduct experiments like once or twice.
Something is not right about the approach to learning Science in Singapore schools.
A few months ago I discussed about the 3 states of water with the P4 boy, he said they learn it on paper but didn't really see anything.
I was so upset, went to the fridge immediately and fished a cold can drink, left it on the table, sat him down and got him to \"observe\" the can for 30 seconds.
Perhaps, a Science teacher can comment. -
