So far he has been coping well with what’s being taught at Wang but I can see he just goes for the sake of going, feels very bored and worse, his appreciation for Chinese language has gone down tremendously. He even resists Chinese story books now! In school, laoshi say his Chinese is very good, particularly in word recognition and listening comprehension, slightly weak in writing and pin yin. He mentions that he learns more in preschool than in Wang.

I would like to take him out of Wang and move to other centre that can inspire him to love the language again, hence need recommendation from parents. What abt Chengzhu or Tien Hsia? I also remember an experienced member here ever recommended Etern before, but it is in Yishun and wondering if it’s worth the travel.

Many thanks in advance and happy holiday everyone!

She is good for Paper2, Oral, Listening Compre, except Composition, which she failed recently. Her vocab is not strong, and there are always words that she can’t write. Composition is her weakest point, which I feel is the only thing that she needs to work on now. DD has chinese homework daily from school, which i think is abit too much, therefore was reluctant to start her on compo tuitio. Thought that her weakness will iron out as she practice more. For English, kids who are strong in phonics usually needs less time for Spelling and it helps for Oral too. IMO, it is important that kindergartens cover these 2 components (phonics and hanyu pinyin) adequately.

I like the textbooks My DS will read the stories at home and we will discuss about the morals in some of these stories.

Many friends sent their kids to Berries and they seemed to enjoy the lessons there. But eventually they switched to other centres in Mid Primary or earlier.

Resources are important (especially for Science). But for Chinese, I looked at some resources from a few enrichment centres and there was not much distinction between them. I think teachers play a more important role. I went to a parents’ briefing at one enrichment centre when my DS was in lower Primary. I was impressed by the teacher. I enrolled my DS and he joined her class. Although my DS enjoyed the lessons, 2 main reasons why we quit after 2 years:

1) Weekly 3 hours class + Tuition Homework + Travel
It took up too many hours weekly. My DS is a fast worker but it would still take him around 2 hours to do the tuition homework. I told the teacher nicely that I would decide how much tuition homework for my DS. She agreed So we spent less than 1 hour on the homework and skipped the rest. We also skipped the tuition class whenever my DS was busy even though the fees were paid.

2) Many teachers teach 1 or 2 levels only. When I know the tuition teacher will not be teaching the next level, we stopped the tuition at the end of the year.

We did not go for tuition since then. So happened that his school Chinese teacher the next year was very good! But alas, the teacher taught him for one year only. However it gave us the confidence that school resources were sufficient as he did very well for school exams. We spent 1 or 2 hours on school resources weekly during school term and more hours closer to exam dates. For certain components like Oral and Compositions, we seldom touch them during school term but instead spend little time here and there during school holidays. He did very well in school exams and PSLE.

Have a nice weekend.

Thank you for sharing. my child is going to p3 next year and im reading up old posts. Even though we speak to her in English… I think she is enjoying it.. perhaps you can play it as a game with your dd. If you speak Chinese, she replies in English.. and when you speak English, she will have to reply in Chinese. Give her praise/reward after that.

Zeal mummy

Reply to Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool) on Sun, 13 Mar 2022 18:07:01 GMT

chenlaoshi\" post_id=\"2061454\" time=\"1647189034\" user_id=\"162894:

...Learning environment and frequency of use is really important for effective learning of languages...

chenlaoshi 万岁👍!

I speak to my dd in mandarin all the time, but she'd only reply in english (reason given was that we are not in china...). I especially agree with Chief's words in bold above.

If your child's foundation in the language is not firm enough, \"tried and tested\" or \"popular\" centres will not be of much help IMO.

Since your son is still young, it will be great if the learning can be tiered towards building of foundation and garnering of interest. Do check out https://www.shhkca.com.sg/children-enrichment (hope their locations will work for you).

I know it's easier said than done but it would help greatly if both you and your wife can also get involved in your son's learning progress. Whereas it's not \"compulsory\", the additional motivation, encouragement and joy he gets throughout the process will spur him on.

Besides, as your son grows older, even if his command of Chinese Language improves as compared to now, it is highly likely that the progress will stagnant or even deteriorate because there are little opportunities for him to use the language other than during CL lesson in school/tuition. Oral and composition component will dealt with the strongest hit.

chenlaoshi

Reply to Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool) on Sat, 12 Mar 2022 07:34:14 GMT

Competence in language depends on one’s need for it.
