Wondering if anyone has any updated reviews or impressions of Mayflower Primary in the last 2-3 years? Looking at it for my twin boys (born 2018). My wife is an alumni who graduated >20 years ago, and naturally things have would have changed since then.

From the school profile, I can see that it has decent achievements, strong in arts/music and won the MOE school distinction award in 2016. Yet I find it puzzling that it seems to be low demand and undersubscribed every year.

Any idea? Thank you.

Mayflower primary will be going thru a 1 year renovation starting jan19 to end Dec19. During this period, the school will occupy the premises which used to be Kebun Bahru Primary School.

School's niche is in performing arts. My two boys are in P4 and P2, both are in School Ensemble. School advocates holistic child development and seem to me not so inclined towards academic achievement. I think it's good becos my boys get to enjoy their sports and music, and not so much into mugging for this and that tests and remedial lessons. However I do know of some parents who transferred their kids to other more academic inclined schools after P3's.

Mayflower Primary is to me an undiscovered and unpolished gem. It's a good neighbourhood school with responsible teachers. With good parenting, any kid would realize their potential here.

My suggestion. Mayflower will always have vacancies. You could have try the more popular schools around e.g Anderson Primary. And to choose Mayflower as backup.

I saw some ranking thingy online (http://mathsproblemsums.com/pranking/), with Mayflower standing at 32 spot (Top school) and Anderson at 65 (Good school), based on some MOE awards and recognition. I'm rather confused as in why so many people are rushing to place their kids at Anderson? My boy is going to P1 next year and he has 2A(2) admission priority to both Mayflower and Anderson. Wonder which will be a better choice. Any advise?

Did your child's teacher allow them more time at the canteen? I do agree that using this punishment is not ideal and if it happens often enough, it may be a good idea to check with the teacher involved.
Just last week the Co form teacher for DS2 called and informed us that DS2 did a mischievous act together with his classmates. She's gonna punish the kids by making the kids write reflection letter during recess (kids will miss recess) today. And teacher informed us to provide breakfast for the kids before school and also she would prepare biscuits for the kids to eat in class during recess. I'm not sure whether biscuits were provided today or not. If not, I would have felt that it's inexcusable for kids to go hungry over recess as a punishment. Though I felt DS2 deserves punishment for the mischievous act.

School has limited sports as CCA, only soccer (boys), netball (girls) and Taekwondo (mixed). Would be good if more sports are introduced for CCA, E.g. popular ones - basketball and badminton, and lesser popular ones such as floorball and tchoukball. Kids really need to participate in sports for a well rounded holistic primary education. Feedback to school, school said they have limited manpower and monetary constraints to offer more sports as CCA options.

Whole class is being withheld in class for as much as 15 minutes from Recess. Yes, it’s 15 minutes. Class was misbehaving and noisy.

School dismissed at 1.45pm. Has your child experienced it ? Is this a proper/authorised manner of punishment for class ? Do share your thoughts. Thanks.

He generally adjusts to school well and was made a class monitor. Just today, I was informed that he was accepted into the violin elective class. Very happy and hope that his interest can sustain, but am at the same time puzzled on how he managed to get pass the audition. His class has PRCs, Pinoys, Koreans an Caucasians, like a mini UN.


I dropped the school teachers a few emails, generally the responses were slow. Probably teachers nowadays are extremely busy. Sport-wise, oh gosh, no basketball courts? And TKD start at P3? Hmm… Wish they have a bouldering wall too; but that’s a luxury when the school dun even have a football field! But the long stairs way will do DS#1 good to loose some weight.

P/s. to be frank, MFPS is not our first choice. And we enrol into MFPS under Phase2C (Supplementary). Though initially upset but overtime has growth to accept it.

Thanks for sharing. My child shared that they would be scolded if late in reporting to the ‘holding’ classroom. Not sure how accurate is that.

Furthermore, there are only very few small tables in the ‘holding’ classroom, which is not enough for all the children to use.

Hi lalazio,

My child has remedial lesson as well. Was being informed that the hour is for them to rest or do homework if there’s any before remedial starts at 3pm. Also to keep them in safe place instead of wondering outside school. But during lunch time, canteen is less crowded with shorter queues. As no lesson is conducted during that holding hour, just tell your child to take it easy n enjoy lunch...u know what i mean??

I agreed with you that holding back for recess as punishment is definitely inappropriate. my P3 child so far has not shared about similar incidents. 30 mins recess time is already so short, and after minus out time for going toilet and queuing to buy food, the actual rest time is much shorter.

but to share further, y’day my child stayed back for remedial. after school end 130pm, the class stayed a little bit longer (about 5 mins maybe). then, they are required to gather at 1.55pm at a ‘holding’ classroom to wait for a remedial class which only begin at 3pm!!
as a result, the pupils had to eat lunch really fast and my child didn’t even finish her food purchased from the canteen stall. I will observe further and feedback if this happens again.
