My children can get into nan hua primary in Phase 2A, but we choose to enrol them in unity primary school which is right across our home. We contemplated this decision over the years leading to the P1 registration. The journey to nanhua will mean less quality sleep for both adults and children while UPS is so convenient, especially true when the kids have to stay back for CCA or extra lessons where I can just pop by to pass them lunch if needed.

For nanhua, we feel that parents who send their kids there generally have higher expectations of their children and it can be a pressure cooker environment for kids who cannot fit in the fast paced curriculum. We decide to let our children live a happier childhood by sending them to UPS and at the same time, we decided to be more hands on and be involved in their education journey.

Parents’ support and involvement play a very important part in the kids journey. We would rather be parents involved in the children’s education journey in a neighbourhood school than to be parents who relied on teachers 100% in a good primary school. We knew of a classmate who transferred to nan hua primary after GEP test and barely scraped through 250 in his psle.

The harnessing support given in Unity Primary is definitely in place and they are doing it right.

Most of the teachers we have encountered in UPS are very passionate about teaching and we are really thankful for them, especially Teachers like Mdm Han, Mdm Tee, Mr Kelvin Ng, Mrs Dawn (just to name some of them). They are really gems in the industry who are always there to give the students their unwavering support. Additional lessons were held leading to major exams, with special mention to Mdm Han giving extra boost before the chinese psle by conducting extra class for the children on a friday, the weekend before the chinese psle.

My children were happy in UPS and this will be part of a memorable piece of their childhood. They have recently graduated, one scoring above 250 and the other above 260.

Called the TLC Student Care Centre opposite the school but they said will changed to child care on year 2017 onward, no more student care service from next year onward.

I understand that the School had initiated ThinkersBox for their students as their cognitive skill development programme for a stretch of 10 months before. I was told that a few primary schools also use ThinkersBox’s cognitive programme for their students. May I check how effective is this programme? Does it really improve on the students’s memory and focusing in their studies? Is there a really big jump in their result shown in their report book? I hope you can give me some advise as I would like to sign my DD for their programme. But since I am signing up as public member, their fees are quite Ex compared to the subsides fees to the school. Hence, I would like to find out from you guys before I sign my DD to this programme. Highly appreciated if anyone can advise me and share with me their experiences. Thank you so much for your help!

The school has a list of school bus operators.
If you opt for a BASC that is not near to the school, you need to arrange transport. You can call up the list of bus operators to find out if they could stop by the BASC that you have in mind. Alternatively, ask the BASC for the operators who send the kids to school. Do these operators operate during school holiday? Also, do take into considerations when they have excursions or CCAs from P3 onwards. Will you be able to get help to fetch your child from school if you are not able to?

Thanks for your advice.
Actually I do visit both school website and personally I like YTPS for their CCAs programs.
The reason I’m considering Unity just because i saw from their website there will be new student care centre in the school on 2014 which is I think is more convenient for me.
But after checking with Unity, their new building would take another 2 years to complete…
So now, I am thinking to register under YTPS.

Anyway, do you have any recommendation for BASC as well as the school transport ?

My child is in YTPS. I like this school as she has a lot of activities and courses which I think my child would like. Do visit their website to have an idea of their CCAs and PERI classes. http://www.yewteepri.moe.edu.sg/
It is active and yet not so busy that might affect their classes.

My friend whose kids are in Unity Primary has good things to say about the school. I was told that the current principal, who took over the school 3 years ago (2011) is a very driven and result oriented principal. The school similarly, has quite a number of activities. They even have very effective development programs for kids who are weak in their subjects. This school also has an active PSG. I was told they organize activities on Sundays, if you have the time to join.

I know that YTPS open house is over. Perhaps you can call these schools to ask about the qualities that you are looking for in a primary school.
