@<bdi>edwardtay79</bdi> Only recently then Minister Chan talked about the fluidity of allowing students who are strong in HMTL/MTL, to take HMTL in secondary school, and not tied to overall PSLE scores. So this is a system that has already been in place for the longest time.

Nothing wrong from analysing data and trends, that students who are getting bad total AL scores, be advised or forced to drop HMTL (at P6). The data probably supports the decision that those who dropped, probably did better after that in the 4 main subjects, since the score does not allow them to go SAP school anyway.

You can say you are forward thinking, but try not to be salty if your kid is not up to the mark, and the system (soon to be ‘previous’ system), does not support your kid in exploring HMTL at primary schools.

If your kid is really good at mother tongue, then even if he has lost a year in sec school, he still got offered at the end. So that is already testament of your kid’s ability. But the testament of your kid’s ability does not equate to the failure of the system.

The system changes, and evolves. Your child is just in the previous system, as are many of his counterparts in his age. The system (before the announcement made in Sep 2024) is, if his overall PSLE score is bad, doesn’t matter if Chinese is AL1, he will still not be eligible for HMTL. So this is not the fault of the school already. You can blame the system if you want to. This has nothing to do with streaming students and into subject banding also. The system, as of 2024, still remains that overall PSLE score is tied to HMTL eligibility, and that naturally translates into overall results in pri sch tied to HMTL eligibility. A logical person will be able to see that.

Anyway hope you can move on already since it sounds like your kid has already moved on from this school.

Cheers!

Hi Mate, I think that the Principal of Xin Min Primary School is following the policy blindly then if there is even such a policy in the first place that directly contradicts with what MOE and the Minister of Education is trying to achieve.

We have already move away from streaming students into EM1 to EM3 classes and to “subject banding”. No student is good in all subjects. Hence I do not understand why a student such as my boy who is proficient in higher Chinese is made to drop higher Chinese just because he did not do too well for English, Maths and Science at the young age of 11 years old at end of Primary 5. So personally for me, is this not an issue with the Principal?

Also for current 2024, is the Principal still adopting such draconian measure and forcing students who are good in higher Chinese to drop them due to being weaker in other subjects? If weak in other subjects, should it not be the school working harder to help students in those subjects excel instead of asking them to drop higher Chinese which is totally irrelevant?

I believe principals have been following policy guidelines. …. We are going into new AI era soon, and many policies can be changed. My guess is, workers values/high paying jobs may not mostly be in science /math like before. Humanity/culture minds may be more sought after in future

Hi bbbay,
We have to agree to disagree. It is totally unreasonable to base on some statistics to make a decision. I am talking about a child doing well with Normal Chinese and also Higher Chinese but forced to drop Higher Chinese as he is so called not doing well with other subjects by the Principal of Xinmin Primary School. This is a dinosaur mindset by a lot of old school principals and parents who just focus on academics and sacrificing a child’s passion for Chinese so that the time can be spent on other subjects…totally illogical and ancient mindset.

Please refer back to what Mr Lawrence Wong had spoken on the recent National Day Rally about the importance of Higher Chinese. Principal with dinosaur mindset should be asked to retire early so that young children can pursue their subject of interest without being forced to drop them like what had happened in Xin Min Primary School.

The school also allow parents to choose HCL for their child even if they are not recommended but the school will hold the decision on whether the child can continue HCL at the end of P5 based on academic performance. So that is very clear that to take HCL, the student must do well in their 4 subjects before they can take up HCL. And the school make it clear that HCL is an optional subject. In fact, a few students gave up HCL at the end of P5 even though they can continue with it, unlike some others who were asked to drop by the school. For your info my child is not from SAP school. So your example of a student allowed to continue HCL could be the student did do well in the other 4 subjects or from SAP school or some other reasons.
