Here are the notes that I used to help me get a 71/75 (Distinction) for the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory exam!

I recommend that you don't memorise all the terms as it's only a small portion and we only have a certain amount of time in our lives each day. Also, the practice papers from ABRSM are really helpful, but you have to pay for it.

Also, don't bother taking the lower grades, waste of money in my opinion. With practice, Grade 5 isn't that hard.

For self study on Theory Grade 5 preparation, besides the books you mentioned, I would recommend you to use this book, “First Steps in Music Theory” Grade 1-5 by Eric Taylor, published by ABRSM. I always recommend my students who take Grade 5 theory exam to use this book as last minute revision and most of my students scored distinction in their exam. As you need to revise all the syllabus from grade 1 to grade 5 to take grade 5 theory exam, it has grade-by-grade presentation of the basic facts of music theory in a pocket-size format.

Most music schools conduct theory lessons, either in group or individual.


Private piano teachers are likely to be charging the same fees as grade 5 practical because it is their time spent, so theory same fees as practical.

Music schools, on the other hand, tend to be cheaper for theory lessons compared to practical lessons.

Anyone has comment on Lina Ng, Ying or official ABRSM book by grades? Definitely need answer sheet as I need to brush up again.

Abrsm sure refund.Last time I helped my students registered the exam thru credit card,they refund to me without notice.The money credited back to the credit card account.

I have G7 qualifications and coached my P4 child myself using my decades old ABRSM “Rudiments and Theory of Music” handbook (syllabus hasn’t changed much!) I also bought the ABRSM past year papers (answers are sold separately) via their website. Start from Grade 1 and teach your way up, getting the child to practice answering the papers step by step. It ain’t that hard, and from what I see the qns don’t change much.

No need to pay the music school the exhorbitant fee for the crash course if the parent has the relevant background and time to teach.

Isnt October exam on 3rd Oct? SA2 is later in the year, isn't it? Shd be fine lah. There's PSLE marking days 19-22 Oct for more concentrated studying of SA2 written papers also.

I suggest you just wait. If the new date does not suit you, then get the refund. It’s hard to decide now when the new date is unknown. They can’t expect parents to commit now.

I agree, Oct exam timing is not good. I missed the registration cutoff for the March theory. Didn’t want Oct so aiming for 2021 March registration. But my kid is in P4.

It’s a tough call for parents whose child is in P5/P6.

Hi Zac's mum, thanks for replying. Just saw it. I hv managed to get it at cristofori, called je n jw, both just stocked in. Saw on book depository, they carry 2019 practice papers with answers!
The ones I got locally doesn't have answers.

The latest syllabus is from 1 January 2018 onwards (I dunno what has changed though):
