Our children learning music do not have to become musicians. not necessary to go SOTA too.
Fingers crossed, I do hope that someday her piano skills can be useful when she has her own children and can impart her knowledge and skills. She can also make use of it to teach other kids if she wants. Not necessary for the money. Too far to think now though. but I seriously doubt she will do a degree in music since she did not take up MEP when she has the chance. She likes music for leisure, which is fine with us. There are adults who join leisure/PA orchestra or wind band. Who knows.

What I was saying is, when a child goes to sec school, it will be easier if he already has some background in an area he is strong at and has interest. Can be a sport, art or music. Unless he wants to do uniform group or infocom club kind for his CCA. If he drop piano, but he has a sport e.g. swimming, is also alright. But if he drop piano and end up spending too much time playing online games or using social media etc, it would not be worthwhile.

There are some sec schools which will have more emphasis in art or music. Just have to choose wisely.

Just think of someone who eventually take Eng or History in university. All the years of learning Math from P1 to JC, struggling with PSLE math etc, music can also be like math, just part of the holistic approach to education, for our children to become a fuller person.

00skyblue00

Reply to All About ABRSM Grades & Support on Tue, 28 Nov 2023 02:17:22 GMT

Garfield2882\" post_id=\"2123778\" time=\"1701067704\" user_id=\"188233:

I am writing as a parent.

My boy showed interest learning piano at age 5 plus. Continue piano and focus on academic?

Your boy seems generally keen in music (plus other things too, like the origami). Let me share from my perspective as a parent with a similarly inclined boy.

The piano is a good foundation for reading bass clef & treble clef notes. Good choice to his mummy for developing his interest in piano; she is correct that it is good training for brain and memory and motor skills.

However, G4 in P3 is a little bit too late if u want to want to use the cert for DSA. Most parents with end goal of DSA music-related domain would just go push accelerated straight for G5, G8 and diploma, nothing else intermediate to waste time. Competitions and awards etc of course. Which ones matter too.

His chosen cca doesnt win syf awards? Cant use that for dsa then. Also most parents would pay for private lessons in the band instrument if really gonna use that for dsa. The dsa audition would require 2 solo contrasting pieces.

In general, u are correct, music and arts are not emphasized in SG. Since u have a boy (like i do), consider too the stark reality that parents do not like male teachers to teach their kids 1-1 lessons: be it music or tutoring or swimming coach. Female teachers are in higher demand. Male teachers will find it a big uphill task making a living out of such professions.

Cut your losses now if u want to. U may have a better chance at academic dsa if u want to plock your money on such enrichment. For my child, i stopped his music lessons after P4 to focus on tuition becos he was struggling with his studies.

Music and arts is more for the soul, an outlet for them to release stress & also to express themselves as a creative being. Career-wise, not much avenue because even the SSO hardly recruits Singaporeans when they have extremely talented applicants from all over Asia flocking to join & work in SG. The best i could hope for my son as an amateur violinist was a wedding performer or a street busker. Not stable income.

Despite the stoppage of music lessons, my son remained interested in music (among other things) and now in Sec 1 he chose a uniform group cca where music plays a large part of the activities. He got to learn a new musical instrument for free in this cca. Sec 1 music lessons also have keyboard playing for fun (with a short performance exam), so he had a nice refresher for 2 hands.

Long story short: in your case, just keep it as a hobby & dun expect more. Kids are quite fickle even if strong interest now. They will have other interests that come in, and should be allowed to develop too. No need to specialize now since he is already too “late” for dsa.

zac's mum

Reply to All About ABRSM Grades & Support on Tue, 28 Nov 2023 01:16:11 GMT

00skyblue00\" post_id=\"2123783\" time=\"1701071033\" user_id=\"143605:

Is he so busy that he has no time for anything other than studies(+tuition)? Their hobbies allows them to express their feelings and be themselves. like you have also pointed out, music trains the mind and motor skills. It also instills discipline and teach abt putting in effort in things we do. One cannot just learn a new piece of music in a day. It takes hours to practise. It train their ears too. My kid has good listening skills.

Many parents wished their kids would continue and not stop learning music, but many have no interest or ability to go higher grades. So it will be a waste if your boy has the ability and interest but he is asked to stop. Stop if kid asked to, not the other way round. my own opinion.

Whether to take up another instrument, you can let him try in P3, usually, kids can pick up second instrument quicker since music theory is the same. only difference is to learn bowing or plucking/strumming skills. But it will be stressful if the only objective is for DSA.

There will be still music lessons in lower sec, so it will be more fun as kids get to do music projects. It's happening in slightly more than on week time.

Here's a Youtube playlist of the videos from the Zoom preview session last month.

https://youtu.be/dddfWAdfQ80

We will go through the following pieces:
Grade 1: A 1-3, B 1-3, C 1-3
Grade 2: A 1-3, B 1-3, C 1-3
Grade 3: A 1-3, B 1-3, C 1-3
Grade 4: A2, A3, B1, B2, C2, C3
Grade 5: A 1-3, B 1-3, C 1-3
Grade 6: A2, A3, A4, B2, B3, B6, C2, C3, C6
Grade 7: A2, A3, B1, C2, C7
Grade 8: A3, A10, B3, B12, C1, C6

4 hours of the seminar is dedicated to Grade 5-8 pieces. More emphasis is placed on dealing with technical difficulties present in the pieces. If you are preparing or teaching these grades you should find these immensely useful.

Can't attend in person? Don't worry, there is also an online viewing option and you will be able to access the videos permanently afterwards as well. In-person attendees will be able to re-watch the seminar online as well. You can register using one of the links below.

https://calendly.com/virtuopiano/abrsm-exam-pieces-with-dr-slawomir-dobrzanski
https://calendly.com/virtuopiano/abrsm-exam-pieces-2023-2024-seminar-by-dr-slawomir-dobrzanski-online

https://postimg.cc/crhDpmT5

Dreamaurora

Reply to All About ABRSM Grades & Support on Wed, 29 Jun 2022 22:02:21 GMT

Dreamaurora\" post_id=\"2072115\" time=\"1656397117\" user_id=\"38907:

In my experience, yes. Disclaimer: I am working very closely with Dr. Slawomir in planning and executing this seminar. We are committed to make this seminar as useful as possible; we are focusing mainly on difficult passages and strategies to learn them rather than simply narrating what to do in the pieces. We will be covering all the pieces in the ABRSM books for Grades 1-3 and 5. The rest of the grades we will pick 5-6 per grade. We are also planning to add the option of viewing the seminar through Youtube.

Venue: Voices of Singapore @ Adelphi
Date and time: Wednesday 13 July 2022, 09:30 - 17:00
Price: $120, $100 (Early bird until 30 June 2022)

Each participant will also receive annotated scores and a link to watch the recorded seminar afterwards.
Dr Slawomir will give a free preview of the seminar on Zoom on Friday, 17 June 2022 from 8:00-9:00 PM SGT. He will go through 6 pieces from the syllabus. Special registration price will be available for attendees of the preview and there will also be a lucky draw where we give out books including the new ABRSM exam books. All dependent on the teacher teaching the kid in the school.

However, for younger kids, before P1, I like \"Y\"'s curriculum and pedagogy.
To first learn to listen, train their ears, then sing and play, finally read and write. The kids get to learn to play in ensemble, train them to count and play in sync.

\"Y\" also has an internal assessment before kid going to external exam. A form of check to maintain their standard of quality. Fees are reasonable.

However, it's normal for teachers to leave the school and get reassigned to a new teacher.
