Hence, I am postponing the class until he is ready to start again, if ever he decided to. A recent conversation with a friend had brought light that it could be the centre issue as the 2 different teachers that our children had are just not able to engage children and expecting too much from the parents. I can only say that I am deeply disappointed as I had waited for more than 1 year for the MYC class only to suffer financial losses and my boy's developed resistance for music class. I guess it was just our luck as I did read good reviews before deciding on them.

irrrlyn

Reply to Music for Young Children (MYC) - Discussion on Tue, 28 Nov 2017 12:18:19 GMT

Hi irrrlyn, thanks for sharing. And I would think that the demand of homework wouldn't be lesser than MYC as Music definitely requires consistent practice. Not sure about your reason for wanting to switch. For my case, I feel that the MYC curriculum may be well designed and I was impressed. However, it probably works better for children who are able to sit through and focus on the class with parents who are able to follow the pace of the teacher as well. Or maybe we just didn't meet the right teacher. Anyway, if MYC doesn't work out, I'm not sure if Yamaha will work since the class size is even bigger. Hence,I had decided to forgo my deposit with MYC and switch to another music school with a smaller teacher:child ratio at a more affordable rate for my child instead.

Hope my sharing helps

irrrlyn

Reply to Music for Young Children (MYC) - Discussion on Mon, 07 Aug 2017 03:00:30 GMT

Hi, I might be considering to switch to other schools. The emphasis is on sight-reading, whereas I heard for Yamaha & Cristofori they emphasize playing by ear.

Sorry I don't know about the latest fees for 4 year olds. As for branches, there are many across Singapore, all under different franchise owners. I suggest u check out one nearest to your home & arrange for a trial lesson. After that u can go straight to Sunbeams 2 and Sunbeams 3 (another 1 year each). So your son will be around 7 years old when completing Sunbeams 3 just like my boy.

Regarding the slow progress, it depends on what is the parent’s purpose for the child to learn piano. If the immediate purpose is for the child to learn many new and popular pieces eg Frozen, Star Wars theme etc. then I think MYC curriculum does not allow for that special tailoring - for that u need individual lessons. Some of my boy’s kindergarten classmates took individual lessons for that reason. But many lost interest or did not practise much & the teacher just said ok nvm we learn sthg else. MYC may seem slow but half the lesson is actually theory lesson & short ensemble (which other music schools have separate lessons & charges for). And I was happy for my boy to have a good theory foundation to learn other instruments. He showed a keen interest in music from toddler age too. He doesn’t have any popular repertoire to show off to friends, but he can sight read & still loves music is good enough for me.

I guess your boy’s class is playing pieces using separate hands now? Soon they will move to playing with both hands together, that will take a lot of coordination & practice. And then the battles over the necessary daily practice will begin hahaha…if you & your child can stick through it (prepare some sort of incentive system!), he will have the basics to try any new piano piece, with encouragement.

Maybe for those children who are too shy of/easily distracted by other children in the group, individual lessons would work better. But these are usually much shorter (20-30min only) and the quality of teachers may vary greatly, especially some may look highly qualified on paper but don’t know how to talk to preschoolers patiently.

Don’t worry too much about people pulling out of the class, have a talk to the school’s manager to see if there are other classes of similar level that u can transfer to if there aren’t enough kids left. I recall at MYC Orchard/Thomson, there are plenty of Sunshine classes with different days & timings to switch to. There may be a few weeks’ waiting gap or catch up required.

For me it is really also to let my son enjoy music and explore his interest. (I started MYC because he was inspired by his music teacher at pre-school and was bugging me to let him learn the keyboard.) May I ask when did your son start to be able to sight read and play some simple pieces?

If I understand correctly, Sunshine 1& 2 takes about 2 years and Sunbeam 1-3 another 3 years? Is that right?
I like the MYC program too and I enjoy being in the class with DS1 as well. haha I plan to also start my DD2 next year after she turns three in Sunshine1.

I do hear some feedback from DS1's course mate's mum that the progress is a bit slow and she is thinking to pull out her daughter after sunshine 1.. If 2 or more pull out, then his class might get disband I am afraid... Naturally I guess individual classes will be more focused and the child's progress might be faster in terms of playing the piano. But I wonder if they are too young (4yo) to start individual classes.

Thanks again for sharing

Mummytang

Reply to Music for Young Children (MYC) - Discussion on Wed, 17 May 2017 04:41:02 GMT

Mummytang:
Hello parents! my DS1 is taking Sunshine 1 course now with MYC and he is 9 months into the course now.

I find that it helps to introduce music to young children and makes it more fun for them due to the group setting and maybe less formal/ restrictive in their terms compared to individual classes.
I would like to ask fellow parents who have/had their children attending courses at MYC, do you go all the way to moonbeam level?
Or do you switch to individual lessons? Yes, it may be a fun thing to do, but in a group of 4-8, there are usually only 1 teacher. There is no way the teacher can pay close attention to all the kids, whether they are playing it right. Most of the corrections are left to the accompanying parent.

All these sales talk about students who finishes a group program being \"equivalent\" to Grade 1 or 2.... what I think they mean is that they cover the contents that are required up to Grade 1 or 2. Whether the student is able to play to that level is not guaranteed, and they never mention whether students can get a pass, a merit or a distinction.

In general, start the child on individual class as early as practically possible. Even a 30 min individual class is better than an hour-long group class.

waiyean

Reply to Music for Young Children (MYC) - Discussion on Thu, 26 Feb 2015 19:04:44 GMT

waiyean:
Hi Pingsped,

If one is serious about learning piano, they should never start on a keyboard.
