<![CDATA[How far is too far?]]>10km from home to school… too much?


Any parents have children who have to travel 10km from home to school? How they are coping?

We are staying in Seng Kang, but school will be in Bishan. I’m very worried if the distance will be too much for my girl to cope?

We live in sembawang but we are thinking whether to register at Anderson primary school at Yio Chu Kang. Any advise? We have good neighbourhood school at sembwang too, Canberra primary. We have to choose between Anderson and Canberra.

It has been crazy moving house twice. We were caught by the cooling measures last year, and had to move to an interim rented place while we complete the sale of the old property, and be eligible for 80% loan for the next property. All in all, we had to rent for 6 months due to hunting for a new home and renovations. It was really no joke moving 2 times within 6 months, and with 3 young children in tow.

But now looking back, it was worth it as my eldest boy tires out easily, and the long journey from West Coast to Bishan would have been too taxing for him.

My humble view is, if you really like the school, then consider moving house to be nearer the school, especially if it is a \"guaranteed\" place in Phase 2A. You won't regret it in the long term. I have at least 2 neighbours who have boys in the same school, who moved house to be nearer the school (both lived in the East before that) when the boys are in P3 due to CCA and supplementary classes in school.

we should have switch hses! haha. for the time being, it's not practical for me to shift hse as my parents also staying in the north. i need their help to look aft my boy aft sch while i'm at work. now at P1, no CCA, so my boy will usually nap for 2 hrs.

He’s the bus operator with buses serving Bt Panjang area.

You will want to check with him what time his bus will pick up your child, and what time your child will reach home. This will give you an idea if you are too far away.
Do remember, the further you are away, the earlier the bus will pick your child up. Conversely, your child will be one of the last few to be dropped off.

We r staying in Woodlands and sending DS to NH daily! So far so good. DS wakes up at 6.10am, drinks his milk while still half awake. Leaves hm by 6.30am and will reach NH b4 7.15am. Traffic wise still ok.

Currently I'm staying up in Woodlands, and am waiting for my new home at Margaret Drive to be ready likely by late 2014 / early 2015. Will need to enrol my DD to P1 by 2013 for enrolment in 2014. I can enrol her in my old school Qifa Primary School under Phase 2A2, but I think distance will be a little far?

Am also considering some primary school options nearer to my future home, which includes Queenstown, Gan Eng Seng and Zhangde Primary. Among the three, I heard good feedback about Zhangde, but distance wise, it's definitely beyond 1km, although it's within the borderline 2km mark. Judging from its popularity & balloting history, I doubt the possibility of a getting in during phase 2C is quite high for me. which means I may need to consider doing PV for consideration under phase 2B.

Now I'm not sure what I should do :? ... shall I just secure a placing in Qifa Primary in phase 2A2, although distance may be a contention ... or shall I try Zhangde for Phase 2B? Any feedback for Queenstown or Gan Eng Seng Primary?

Found out that NH is a top school in SG so cannot bear to let the chance slip away for my kids....

i’m staying near boonkeng,since near by schools r not much popular and good,and have mother tongue tamil,cant go to hong wen school( a good school),planning to register in chij toapayoh,but they dont have PV also,seems have balloting within 1 km also…

I agree. What you need is to reduce the traveling time not to increasing the chance to get in NH.

Not ruling out balloting for an above average school in HG/SK. Just dun feel gd that a confirmed place in a very gd school goes begging...

but moving house also a super major decision... so both are big decisions... jus have take into consideration...
