In SG, especially for kids, hobbies stop becoming fun very quickly because suddenly it becomes about “oh can you DSA for that,” “how can you get to the next level” etc.

I was caught up with that when the kids were younger, but also they genuinely seemed to have some flair for their sports (gymnastics, badminton) + resilience to go through the training.

Some of the relationships with our enrichment trainers felt more transactional, but we met this elderly man at a CC and he was very passionate about badminton! He taught my son the basics, and my son joined the school team (that’s when we scaled down lessons with him and had to pay for the $$$ classes).

Eventually my son lost interest in competing, and I contacted this coach again. After some time, he told us that since he’s taught my son everything he knows, they can just be sparring partners. All I need to do is book the courts, which I try to do every week ❤

So I just let him explore and I am happy to see how he is fascinated with things. He has so many questions (a few times I am irritated hahaha - my bad). We should learn things from our kids, and not only us teaching them.

In what activity they gets more engaged. These are some ways to identify their interests and if you think their interests are worthy then focus on their interests and help them grow their skill in that interest. they will enjoy things that they are good in, and when they get positive feedback , this may reinforce their determination to continue.

hence, parents need to be the "cheerleaders" , and encourage them along the way
most importantly, they must also take ownership of their choice

Just thinking out loud, I think kids will look to their parents for cues on developing hobbies, and the best case scenario is we want them to develop good hobbies. But if we don't have any hobbies or interests that we pursue, and spend all our time on our phones/netflix, that will likely leave an impression on them as well..

IMO parents not only need to realize our kids' academic and social needs, helping them to plan a Road-map for their learning journey is most important. A good scholarship not only provides them a platform to successful collaboration, it also changes our lives.
We can save some tuition fees for our family holidays and retirement

It depends on a child if where or what is his/her talent suits. it is better that child will discover its own hobby.

I understand how you feel. I almost run out of patience with my child because he wanted to buy a lot of stuff whenever he finds a certain hobby suits him. But after several days, he just disregard all those stuff. It is expensive to inculcate a new hobby to a child. 😞

Eg. If caring is the quality we focus can bring kids to volunteer together as a family to care for others.
To cultivate patience, drawing or artwork can cultivate both patience and creativity.
