<![CDATA[eReader recommendation]]>Hi all,


am thinking of indulging in a eReader, thinking of getting either a Kindle or Kobo.

For me, I only (so far) read free ebooks and borrow books from National Library.

My eyes also get tired easily when using laptop (can tear/cry at the end of the workday) so not sure if Kindle paperwhite is the one for me (also rule out tablet).

Am thinking of using the ereader to download free children ebooks too (to lure my DD away from my hb’s tablet!)

I also have some pdf books that I simply have no time to read.

How bad is the web surfing btw?

So basically what I am looking for is
1) able to read free ebooks (from NLB or other sources). I don’t mind doing easy conversion/copying from one device to another
2) not straining on the eye (understand that PW’s light cannot be turned off, will the lowest lighting still be straining lousy eyes like mine?)
3) able to read PDF
4) text to speech (optional, was thinking of using that for my DD)
5) long battery life

Any recommendations? Please advise. Thanks!

It seems much like the Kobo Clara HD, and I doubt I’ll be using the new features (waterproof, audiobooks etc). The main thing is that the power button is now a circle on the back instead of that little strip on the bottom. The power button on my Clara HD disintegrated several months ago, and I’ve been using a toothpick to power on/off - which has caused a few stares on the MRT!

Ooh... yes! But I use my phone, download Overdrive, and tada... I have my own personal library with NLB 🙂
No need to worry about returning books because they are automatically deleted once the borrowing period is over.

I usually load the books and let my child take the kobo to sch.

Kobo is good for me cos it’s linked to overdrive - which is linked to NLB.

So it’s like borrow ebook for free.

Also, I don't think any Kindle supports pen input. Anyway, I think I better make better use of that z fold I got as my primary phone 🙂
I flatly refuse to get Kindle. NLB has free and plentiful ebooks. Now our problem is that the Kobo Clara only comes in 1 colour, so we'll have 2 in the home. Going to be confusing!

It must have been at least 5 years, but hey... if it still works, just use it.

I don't recall getting such a message. I've been using Overdrive since I got my current Kobo 2 yrs ago, and Overdrive still works fine. I either use Overdrive on the Kobo to borrow from NLB, or borrow on NLB's website and sync on the Kobo. Both methods work.
