You can say I covered almost the popular schools like MPM, Kumon, Shichida and those abacus schools but got a really good surprise when I found this Enopi Maths school. I’ve enrolled here since Feb and I must say I’m really impress with the school and teaching. It’s quiet, clean and there’s not many students in her class (abt 5 including her). The best part is that the Maths booklets are wonderful - they are colourful and the contents have lots of cartoons and characters, making the learning a play experience which is what children wants! Right now, she gets two booklets (abt 16 pages) for homework every week. She discipline herself by pacing and finishing her tasks as she knows that she must complete them and pass to her teacher in the next lesson. Have noticed she’s building a routine and accountability and that will stands great when she goes to Pri 1 next year, not to mention that Maths is one of the core subjects.

Right now she says that Sunday is her favouite day of the week…why…because that’s the day she has Enopi Maths class.

Thru Eye Level syllabus, my child has managed to perform addition/subtraction mentally without using of fingers/toes/markers etc. This does not come easy as lots of repeated practises using identical numbers are required. And at times, hair tearing sessions with the child at home.

How Eye Level does this:
- A DT (Diagnostic Test) will be conducted where child will be asssessed. Teacher will then recommend the appropriate level/booklet to start from.

- Eye Level Maths contains a Critial Thinking Maths(CTM) and Basic Thinking Maths(BTM) component.

- During class time, a child will be required to complete 1 CTM booklet, and 1 BTM booklet. 1 BTM booklet will be taken home as homework, completed and returned to teacher for marking at next lesson

- Each BTM booklet has about 16 pages.
Each page contains 8 to 10 questions on average.

- Eye Level first introduces number bonds (1,2,3,4,5, ..10,11,... etc)

- Eye Level uses a range of numbers from 1 to 20, and formulate its questions in the booklets

- Using this small limited range, addition e.g. +1 will first be introduced, followed by +2, +3 etc. Followed by subtraction, before resuming bigger numbers to add/subtract e.g. +4, +5, +6 etc

- First few pages of a booklet will contain introduction questions in sequence. e.g. 0+1, 1+1, 2+1 etc

- Subsequent pages of the booklet will contain earlier questions appearing at randon. e.g. 0+1, 1+0, 2+1, 1+3 etc to reinforce understanding

- These questions may continue to reappear for the next few bookets in a row

Notes:
- The above is similar to kumon concept, but on a much limited number range (e.g. 1-20 only)

- Therefore it can be expected that identical question will be seen thruout the booklet(s).
e.g. 0+1 will be seen on page 3, and maybe on page 5 and 8 again.

This approach is good because ...
- it reinforces the mental sums methology. No need to use fingers or toes.

- it works on a limited number range (e.g. summation/substraction under 20).

- Eye Level uses timing to measure mastery of the topic. No need to worry that child will run out of time when doing maths paper next time (trained from young)

- Eye Level allows a child to finish the classwork at his/her own pace before leaving the center. No strict time limitation as it is not a teacher lead class.

This approach is not ideal because
- Parents who enroll their child may find themselves waiting for the child longer than normal if there happened to have more children in the same timeslot.
e.g. new child/ makeup class/ kids who do very slowly/ waiting for teacher to be freed up before guiding them etc

- kids who remember question(s) completed before will find it fustrating to keep re-answering identical question every other page. (There is only that limited few questions that could be set within this small range after all)

- Eye Level uses timing to measure mastery of the topic.
Not suitable for children who have short attention span and has difficulties focusing on task at hand at one go. Child might be made to repeat booklet (exceeded max timing) although concept has already been mastered and ended up fustrated with doing maths.

- Teaching approach varies from teacher to teacher. A teacher might insist that child use mental skips when attempting the questions. Another teacher might just draw rods/ lines on the booklet to aid child to complete the booket in a shorter time

- Feedbacks may different from teacher to teacher, from session to session. Teacher A may think progress is ok, but teacher B may think child needs to redo a certain booklet/level

Hope the above helps in answering some common questions found in this thread

* Edited for formatting/ additional info *

lonerunner

Reply to Eye Level Education Centre (aka Enopi) - Discussion on Thu, 27 Nov 2014 05:35:08 GMT

Hi !
