sad to say this case has opened old wounds for me. :mad:

SINGAPORE - He claimed he saw himself in the younger co-worker, and that he was dishing out tough love when he hit him several times on the cheek.

\"I treated him like a little brother, I wanted to teach him,\" the man was overheard saying to the victim's parents when they confronted him, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

So he apologised. And apologised. But to no avail.

The outraged parents were neither convinced nor appeased, even after an hour.

The man repeatedly said that he would shoulder the responsibility, to which a family member asked if he could fork out $100,000 in compensation. This figure, said the family member, was based on a graduate's $1,000 starting pay for the first year, plus an increment of $500 every month starting from the second year, plus bonuses and unpaid leave.

It all began when a video of the physical abuse was uploaded on YouTube and posted on popular forum Hardware Zone, and it went viral.

In the video, the victim, believed to be a 29-year-old university student, was seen repeatedly hit by an older co-worker in the office.

A student from the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), who was an intern at the company, filmed the 17-second video and uploaded it on YouTube on Friday night.

The victim's parents were subsequently alerted. On Monday morning, they decided to confront the abuser, believed to be their son's supervisor at software company Encore eServices. It is located at iHub, an office building in Jurong East.

The office was reportedly closed on Tuesday.

Wanbao reported that the victim has been with the company for three years and has been paid $500 a month, with no entitlement to annual leave and year-end bonuses.

The victim told the paper: \"I tried asking for a raise before, but my boss said that I didn't have enough experience and I wasn't performing well.\"

Shortage of manpower

The victim added that he enjoyed working there and did not want to abandon his work halfway. He also claimed that he tried to resign last year but couldn't due to a shortage of manpower.

He claimed he had not highlighted the abuse to the company's human resource department as he was concerned for his supervisor's family. He felt that although he has learnt a lot from his co-worker, the abuse caught on camera was the worst he had experienced.

The victim's mother, Mrs Tan, 61, was quoted as saying that she and her husband have never laid a hand on their only son.

\"To see him being hit by someone other than us, I feel so heartbroken and I can't stop crying,\" she said.

The victim has since filed a police report. His parents have also asked him to quit his job.

At 12.45pm on Tuesday, the victim, his parents and three relatives reportedly went to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to file a complaint.

MOM had earlier said that they were aware of the matter, and were in touch with the student who recorded the video.

A spokesman had issued a statement saying that employers are expected to treat their employees fairly and with respect. The spokesman also advised employees who feel that they are treated unfairly or threatened to report the matter to their supervisor or human resource department. If they are unionised, they should get advice from their union.

\"If the threat involves physical harm, the employees should report it to the police immediately,\" the spokesman added.

Shin Min Daily News reported that the parents have hailed the SIM student who recorded the abuse as a \"saviour\" for reporting the matter to the MOM.

The victim is also reported to have been under stress and did not go to work on Tuesday.

Mrs Tan said: \"He may be resting and not working now, but it's fine. We will just have to live more frugally during this period of time.\"

SIM reportedly terminated their student's internship at the company.

Actually an area often overlook is the verbal/emotional/mental abuse. A colleague from another office used relate to me how she is verbally and mentally abused by the manager (usually in between a lot of tears). One day when she was 8 months pregnant, she finally called it quits and begged the big boss to fire her so that she could leave immediately (and still get her maternity benefits). In a way she was lucky, offered no pay leave + maternity and \"after that see how it goes\".... but really, emotional abuse could be quite bad, too.

At my current workplace, I witness the whole gang bullying one person. Strangely, the victim is not someone soft-spoken with low self-esteem. On the contrary, she is quite smart, quick thinking and fast at retorting. Nevertheless, it doesn't make the verbal abuse more acceptable. Though the 'victim' has shared with me her unhappiness, she has no plan to leave. She is also able to defend herself and seems to be trying hard to 'curry flavour' her 'abusers' instead!

As per what was reported in today's wanbao, he admitted he's a person with very low self esteem. He has no self confidence. However, he said he's a very hardworking and dedicated worker. A counsellor analysed that due to his lack of confidence, he's very afraid of searching for a job. He's worried of not able to find a job and that will lower his self-esteem even further.

Sad to say, his family background and parents' teachings had moulded his present character. Reporter remarked that they are very non-confrontational folks, everything 以和为贵, 大事化小. The father said his son is very 知足. Thus, despite getting $500 per month, he was ok. Gosh!!! :slapshead: They knew he was getting $500 and yet, they didn't ask him to quit.
