When u use the word \"opt out\",
Does this mean they can opt for CL from Sec 1 onwards?
it means that u actually qualified for HCL (Sec 1 onwards), but strangely, you don't want to do HCL ?
May I ask,
why do u want to opt out of HCL from Sec 1, especially studying in a SAP Secondary school like CHS, doesn't quite make sense,
when
1) if your son is from the \"IP\" track, everyone is trying to clear HCL by end of Year 4 (IP), so that when go up to Year 5 (Eunoia JC), can forget about Chinese.
You mean,
you still want him to study one more additional burdened subject (Chinese) in Eunoia JC, when his plate is full of 4 H2 A-level subjects piled up, and when so many other EJC (1) students are already done with HCL clearance ?
Or
2) if your son is from the \"O\" level track,
so many boys doing Standard Chinese (\"pu- hua\") at the end of Sec 1 are trying their best to brush up / improve Chinese, hoping to be offered to start Sec 2 (HCL) January to catch up, so that come Sec 4, they still have the opportunity, make it in time to clear their HCL asap and thus, further reduced their L1R5 Raw score by another 2 discounted points, to enter better JCs. These two discounted points are so crucial, to our O-level boys!
So,
whether your son fall under \"IP\" or fall under \"O-level\" track, it is still far better to clear your HCL, by end of Sec 4. Just get it over and be done with Chinese. All you need is a minimum, lowest \"D7\" grade in clearance of GCE O-level (HCL). MOE is asking for D7, not C6 clearance. Look long term, think long term. -

The above is the reply from the Chinese assistant head of CHS. All IP kids will be taking HCL. For O'level track, MOE will assign HCL or CL depending on your grade that you got in your PSLE. Those that have AL8 or lower will be assigned HCL.
All IP students will be taking HCL. For O'level students, MOE will allocate either HCL or CL depending on the student's grade. Usually, if you have an AL score of 8 or lower, or AL1/2 for your CL exams, you will be assigned HCL. Otherwise, the student will be taking CL. It is not that uncommon for kids in SAP schools to be taking CL instead of HCL.
It is also not a question of SAP or Non-SAP. My boy hates Chinese but he just loves his school. He just happens to be in a SAP primary school that's all. -

Sec 1 HCL is not easy at all - There is a minimum grade for promotion, and it will also affect your total average % which may affect streaming in Sec 2. Most importantly, he does not want to do HCL at all but he has a strong attachment to his school and wants to be back here. It's a boy thing maybe I don't know! Anyway after talking to the head, my boy likely would not be assigned HCL if he goes into CHS via affiliation AL12, so I have also cleared my concerns at my end. Also, he may not be going the JC route as well. Not looking at IP track at all.

Yes... I had a strong attachment to my St Andrew's primary school so I went to the secondary school. I wasn't so impressed with the secondary school experience so I went off to a JC where very few (about 5) of my classmates went to, instead of SAJC.

Nothing wrong with kids not going to IP/JCs or university at all. As long as he is doing his best in whatever he is currently doing, and can thrive wherever he goes to, he will succeed in all that he aims for. And our role is not to bask in whatever glory he brings, but to understand and support him in whatever ways we can to bring him to that level. -

Hi all,
I wish to gather some opinions , what do you think the chance of getting into chs with AL 9M for O route based on non affiliate? Weighing it vs maris Stella where he is from to put the first choice. It seem that non affiliate is only 20% of the quota for O route which is very small. -
Hi, my kid is interested in Catholic high o lvl track… would anyone able to share some inputs on culture, teachers and workload of CHS? don’t really see much feedback/comments abt CHS online, so asking… thank you!
