Has your child has been diagnosed formally by specialist for ADHD? If yes I suppose you can consult the specialist or request for referral to a therapist that can work out some plans for the child?

I have an adult daughter with very poor EF, and seriously, it can’t be “cured”. We’ve instituted lots of self-help which she has learned, but we see that it’s something that will be with her through life. She has learned to manage day to day living and work, but life can be challenging (but she has other issues too, not just ADHD).

I applauded the initiative for nationwide screening for ADHD and ASD for 8-18yo as early intervention helps!

But why are the studies / screening of ADHD and ASD undertaken by IMH? After all a lot of people still have a very negative image of IMH. Would it be better to conduct the studies under National Institute of Neuroscience or other research institutes? I am sure if dyslexic kids are classified as IMH patients, many parents will think twice or thrice before acknowledging that their kids have dyslexia.

Likewise for kids with anxiety disorder or depression, I know of parents who choose to ignore their kids’ condition because of their reluctance for their kids to be sent to IMH for diagnosis and treatment. Although we now have a better understanding of mental health issues these days, like it or not, any associations of our kids with IMH still carries negative overtones.

ASD is autism spectrum disorder. I am very sure your daughter doesn't have that - her social skills sound fine! Executive function issues are probably more likely, but there are many possible causes. ADHD is one of them, but many learning disabilities can result in exec function issues. It's just a symptom, so you still have to identify the cause.

Once, for consultation at 8-9yo. Psychologist asked if she was last in class, I said no. Whether she was disruptive during lessons (walked around classroom or excessive talking), I said no. Psychologist said ADHD without “H” is not easy to diagnose as everyone day dreams, just to what extent.

Academic wise, I think she would be able to achieve more if not for her extremely short attention span. I do not have the energy to sit next to her, like how I did in primary school.

Many teens aspired to be one but not my DD2 lol. She said just one wrong post, the fans/society will condemn, that’s the end of her social media career. Lol. Whereas in an office setting, wrong report or get involved in office politics, can still survive, haha.

Being gifted and suffering from attention deficit can co-exist.

When my DD2 moved on to sec, I don’t know whether it is due to puberty or that the teachers failed to engage her, she and a handful of gepper classmates weren’t doing as well as expected of them. Don’t have the idea that once accepted into gep, ADD/ADHD issues will disappear, it won’t! There are geppers fallen by the side quietly for different reasons. Like those who cannot find the motivation to work hard cos everything is still “so boring”. But life is pretty mundane is it not?

Last week, DD2 was at home so I talked to her about my woes for that day. After 5mins, I can see her eyes starting to drift and in a state of daze already. My hub thinks she lacks empathy but I think it has something due to her extremely short attention span. I can’t tell if her laziness and lack of motivation are also due to her short attention span.
