If your child is exempted by MOE from the MT requirement, he can still go to any sec school (except maybe the SAP schools - not sure about that). The PSLE score will be adjusted to take into account that he took 3 subjects instead of 4. Is the school suggesting that he get exemption? Because if he is in P6 now, it's too late to apply. There is a thread on MT exemption - you may want to read more there.

sharonkhoo

Reply to PSLE 2013 - Results Discussion on Mon, 15 Sep 2014 07:07:05 GMT

My child is a mixed and he has option to take or not to take Chinese. For the subject called MT, the Chinese MT, Tamil MT, Malay MT and other MTs are computed as ONE common subject for all to compete. All these languages are different animals. It is like asking all different animals to run the 100m race regardless of their shape and sizes, even with the same rules and formats. All have different syllabus, complexity, marking standards and expectation. There is no COMMON BASE for accurate comparison. It is like comparing an apple to an orange.

Also different MT papers are set and marked by different groups of people. Will MOE accept the PSLE results for, say English, if every school sets and marks their own papers?

--------------------
Moe has said that the presence of t-scores negates the differences of the difficulty of papers, even more so for MT.

Moe cannot allow schools to set and mark their own papers. There is the risk of schools cheating eg. set easy papers and mark leniently either deliberately or out of ignorance.

Having the papers marked by teachers from other schools is fair as teachers will not give more marks to the apple of their eye or penalise the naughty kids intentionally.
-----------------------------------

T-Score is the ranking of the students taking Chinese MT, Tamil MT or Malay MT. It is not possible to group all these different animals and decide which is no 1 or which is the last. You can only compare within your own kind of animals.

If MOE will not allow schools to set and mark their own papers, then why MOE allows different group of people to set and mark different MT papers. Doesn’t make sense.

DD missed the entire prelims due to medical reason but she got the Edusave scholarship. So, I think it's based on PSLE scores.

Lock

Reply to PSLE 2013 - Results Discussion on Sat, 04 Jan 2014 10:44:50 GMT

I think it is more difficult for top school students e.g. NYPS to get Edusave scholarship because the competition is tougher in the school compared to students in neighbourhood school.

I have a friend whose DD did very badly for Prelim (not within 10% of the school cohort) but manage to get 254 in PSLE, does not receive the scholarship. And the parent comment it is very unfair to base on prelim to receive the scholarship. That's her view.

Edusave Scholarship/Bursary starts from P1, believe all the way to JC. It's based on yearly school results. Actually much bigger number of students gets to benefit from it.

The specific scholarship like EESIS is only specific to the top 3% during PSLE. They serve different purposes.

BeContented

Reply to PSLE 2013 - Results Discussion on Sat, 04 Jan 2014 10:24:51 GMT

ngl2010:

elmoland73:
Edusave Scholarship.

I think the COP for Edusave Scholarship depends on the school.

Edusave scholarship is based on school results only, totally not related to t-score.

BeContented
