Cardboard base, the chess pieces are standard tournament size, nice to hold, heavy enough to stand properly, easy to see. We've had it for almost 7 years and it has stood up to wear and tear very well. I cannot remember the price, but it was cheap enough for my ds to bring to school and not worry about them getting damaged or lost. <br />I am not sure if they sell it, but that is one possible place to check.<br /><br />Ah, I see SCF was already mentioned earlier in the thread. But it is actually very near to Bishan MRT station, which also has a great library nearby and there is a cinema in Junction 8. The Bras Basah one probably has the greatest choice. Simple set with magnetic board. We also have a glass set given by DH’s boss but that one is in our display cupboard. <br /><br /><br />I think you might be able to find in Toys R Us if you don’t mind. If they are young and still starting out, don’t spend too much on it, they misplace the pieces and so far I have not been able to find any place that just sell the pieces. <br /><br />I am looking for a chess clock for DS. It’s in bishan. They run classes, organize tournaments etc. Selling chess set too. Not too exp, two versions, about $30-$40.<br /><br />I was told that these sets are the international standard sets. All big scale competitions uses these chess sets. The chess pieces are of the standard quality, sizes and colours. But I personally is not keen to buy them. I am looking for some exquisite sets, maybe something made of wood?</p>
