Managed to find a suitable chess set at my first stop - popular bookshop. Functionally big 40cm x 40cm.
That's convenient and about the right size. :xedfingers:
JS, yes, like the one in your photo. I just did a quick measure with a short ruler and ours is very slightly smaller (or my measuring is terrible).

We got our most functional set from Singapore Chess Federation years back. Cardboard base, the chess pieces are standard tournament size, nice to hold, heavy enough to stand properly, easy to see. We've had it for almost 7 years and it has stood up to wear and tear very well. I cannot remember the price, but it was cheap enough for my ds to bring to school and not worry about them getting damaged or lost.
I am not sure if they sell it, but that is one possible place to check.

Ah, I see SCF was already mentioned earlier in the thread. But it is actually very near to Bishan MRT station, which also has a great library nearby and there is a cinema in Junction 8. If you don't mind, you can actually make it a small outing and kill 3 birds with one stone.

Is your scf set 20\"×20\"?

I remember scf boards are larger when my boy was playing there.

Sleepy : toy r us has the kids' size 10\"×10\". It is in a tin that is 10\" long. Pavilion is the brand. We play on this at home.

U can play e-chess on iPad too but apps r good only when you hv no one to play with or when u r travelling. My ds n dh played e-chess on the plane to kill time.

I have seen them at Popular, but not sure if all the outlets have a good range. The Bras Basah one probably has the greatest choice. I've seen chess sets at Toys R Us as well.

Nice to hold and move. Mine has the King standing at 9cm tall; not sure if this is 'Standard Tournament Size. Sure beats those teeny weenie chess pieces. Just a suggestion.

It'll be good to let them join the chess CCA in school and play in small committee club competitions like Queenstown etc as it will be good for experience.

Simple set with magnetic board. We also have a glass set given by DH’s boss but that one is in our display cupboard.


I think you might be able to find in Toys R Us if you don’t mind. If they are young and still starting out, don’t spend too much on it, they misplace the pieces and so far I have not been able to find any place that just sell the pieces.

You can consider the Singapore chess federation. It’s in bishan. They run classes, organize tournaments etc. Selling chess set too. Not too exp, two versions, about $30-$40.

I was told that these sets are the international standard sets. All big scale competitions uses these chess sets. The chess pieces are of the standard quality, sizes and colours. But I personally is not keen to buy them. I am looking for some exquisite sets, maybe something made of wood?
