Actually Singapore reminds me of the Disneyland \"it's a small world\" which I enjoyed a lot. It is a place full of different nationalities and races which makes us vibrant and attractive. When Sir Stamford Raffles made the town plannning, he also planned it by race and nationality so we get the Little India, Chinatown, Arab Street etc.... So let's not be misled by external parties about disharmony based on nationality or race alone, it is plainly nonsense. People riot because there is a pain point that can arise from anything they are not happy about and unfortunately unity is strength for anything good or bad.

As for the 'suay suay' walk into another riot, I think we also need to take note of a list of popular places where young gangsters with hot blood hang out and staring can kill...those are also potential time bomb areas.

Anyway, it is interesting that you mention it was Sir Stamford Raffles who did the town planning. At least it shows some understanding and respect of natural human behaviour. Don't think he would approve the idea of having 6.9 millions in such a small island. 🦆

If you know, then stay away...you can go there for your business on other days.

Perhaps this is a ‘premise’ calculated for Law Soc to argue that rioters were under the influence of alcohol, hence dun be too harsh on those poor transient workers who are here to make an honest living…


Some groups of civil activists and social media are, however, trying to stir hornet’s nest by insinuating it’s more than just alcoholism; that it stems from larger issues such as workplace disputes, oppression, salary arrears and living conditions. But is it? PM and Minister for Law already said no evidence to suggest that. All are happy that they hv a job here and are satisfied with the living conditions, pay, welfare, etc.

I believe it wasn’t volitional; it was mainly due to alcohol, cos drinking is the most comfy thing blue collar male workers can turn to on their rest days, just as coolies in the 19th-cent turned to opium to drown in their sorrows and loneliness. Transient workers are mostly simpletons coming here to toil under the hot sun to earn a living to better the lot of their loved ones back home.

Not every blue collar worker wants to surf the net, play pinballs or pool every week at the migrants recreation centre. And certainly not everyone wants to visit Geylang. Instead, it’s more economic to sit around on open fields to chat with countryfolks over some cheap beers on weekends. Banning alcohol is a good start. Better than nothing. Didn’t Britain stop sale of alcohols after 11pm in taverns for 90 yrs too (until 2005) to stem similar social problems caused by workers too?

I think another area to be careful is Beach Road. A lot of Thai workers also like to congregate there n they get into fights becos of drinking.

If alcohol is banned in little India, will the workers congregate elsewhere to drink? An Indian worker also felt that his fellow countrymen go haywire when they are less sober. For foreign workers, it is understandable they would want to gather in their so-called hometown with their own people. So what's the solution?
