My dd just got her confirmation for Sec 3 subject combi, she will be taking Pure Bio, Pure Chem, A and E Math, Core Lit, ss/Geog and HMTL. To be frank, I was not aware that certain jcs require you to have taken Biology in upper sec, can you kindly help to list which are the jcs that require Bio? I am now petrified as I initially had hoped that she would get Pure Physics, also , will taking Core lit give her a chance to try for Humanities program? thanking you in advance.

To laughoutloudyolo, I suggest you check with each JC on their requirements. Different JCs have different criteria.

For Yishun JC, if you want to do H2 Biology, you need >>
a) Pass in Pure Biology and, either Pure Chemistry or Science(Chemistry)


OR
b) Distinction in Science (Biology/Physics) and a pass in Pure Chemistry
OR
c) Distinction in Science (Biology/Chemistry)

*Students who wish to offer the subject but do not meet the above requirement will need to attend an interview/test by SH/Biology and/or HOD/Science.

For Anderson JC,
H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry or H2 Biology
Should preferably have obtained:
a) B3 or better in the respective pure science subjects, OR
b) A2 or better in the relevant combined science subjects

Based on the info on NUS FoE admission website, I believe Physics at 'O' level is still required for all the engineering courses though the subject need not be offered at the 'A' level.


*Students without H2 or H1 Physics need to have 'O' level or equivalent in Physics and will be required to take specified Physics bridging modules.

Hi. From my knowledge, most engineering courses require H2 Physics. And in order to take H2 Physics, most JCs require students to take Pure Physics in secondary schools. (although SOME JCs allow combined science students).

Hmm sounds like my DD's case.
In the end she is giving up Bio and deciding to take double science (pure physics and pure chem) and double humans (lit and history). Her logic is that she can always take bio in year 5 if she wants to - not a prerequisite as compared to physics and chem.

I read somewhere that if a child does not take up biology in Sec 3 and 4, he/she can still choose to take up biology in JC. Does it applies the same for Physics ? :?

Hi everyone,

I am new here and unsure if i am posting in the right thread.

Does anyone know if HCL can be used to replace English in L1R5 if HCL score is A2 and English is B4 and at the same time deduct 2 points for HCL?

Also if Sec 3 and 4 does not take Physics, can the child still take Physics in JC ?

I think there is still a way to score good results for SS. So probably need to ask ard and learn from those top scorers on how they are able to achieve it.
