<![CDATA[All About T-Score]]>Hi All,

Base on the feedback from all parents and using the result from 2007. 2007 PSLE is pretty similar to 2009; very difficult math, easy Chinese and some tricky Science questions.

I have estimated the parameter to calculate the T score as followed;
CL: Mean = 78, StdDev = 10
EL: Mean = 73, StdDev = 11
Math : Mean = 63, StdDev = 9
Sci : Mean = 67, StdDev = 12

Use the formula : 50 - 10 * (your score - Mean)/StdDev
for each subject. Sum them up, you should get a glimps.

Reason

(80 x 4 subjects ) = 320 x 0.72 = 230.4

And, what does above 80+ marks fall into ?
under AL 3 band

So, AL 3 x 4 subjects = Total is AL 12, not AL 16

If take 75 marks per subject, what will it give us ?

75 x 4 = 300 x 0.72 = give us Tscore 216, which is far away from 230

So, 230 is around AL ... 12

- that’s not how t score is calculated . That is the raw score . T score needs to take into account cohort score and standard deviation for the year . It’s quite a black box imho.

230 is moderated score, AL is raw score. May not be direct translation.

If 230 is mode, most kids scoring this compared with other score average score, is more plausible to be 75 and above average, the intention of grade A.

Hence Al 12 for 230 is a bit high. Is a hunch, either of us could be wrong, because we never have raw score to work on. Except sch results. But that is also on a different calibration

Mode should be between 220 and 240 (~20 schools with COP between 220-230 and ~20 schools with COP between 230 and 240), 230 would be right down the middle - a good guess.

Having said that, there are also cases of students who did very well for prelims (4A*) and ended up with 24+ results for PSLE. The surprise can go either way. That's why such estimations are what it is, estimations. They are not fool proof predictions.
Agree. Take all these estimations with a pinch of salt. The take home message from all these sharing is: anything is possible. Focus on what you can do, e.g., work hard for PSLE, stay healthy, be calm and positive during exams, etc. And let the results take care of itself.
