<![CDATA[Secondary School CCA]]>My child will be going to sec 1 in 3 weeks time. Wonder how many CCA each student need to join in sec school? As many as you like so as to keep him occupy due to both parents working? or 1 sport and clud/UF Gp or either one will do? Does the student need to join the same CCA through out his 4 yrs and what about IP student whoes course will take 6 yrs? Along the way is it possible to change CCA and how will it impact the CCA score?


Any experience or knowledgeable parents care to share sec CCA scoring system and the usefulness of sec school CCA mark?

Hello, I have been browsing through the SCGS CCAs and it appears quite competitive in terms of the intake (some CCAs have less than 10 places per year). Could you share your experiences in getting into the CCA of choice? I am afraid that DD will end up in the CCA that she does not enjoy, due to the high competitiveness.

For better or worse, I think CCA allocation is an uncertainty for most students at any school. For many kids, this will be the first time they don't get what they want, which while disappointing, may not be a bad thing (relatively speaking, this is an outcome with low consequences). I can't comment on either of the schools you are asking about, but I think the following generally applies:

-Team sports will take in players/students with a variety of backgrounds (in addition to the DSA kids, there will be some recreational players and kids with limited/no experience). The individual sports may be tougher to get a spot.
-I'd look at whether the school is a perennial powerhouse in the targeted sport (or performing art, etc). While not strictly true, it may have an impact on how many DSA kids were brought in and whether other experienced/good players target the school for the CCA.

Net-Net, I would just pick the school based on other factors and try your luck at the CCA auditions/trials. I think the UGs are not that bad (many good experiences, building friendships, time outdoors - this factor may favour the boys in general?), but they require one to have an open mind.

Thank you for your info., I misunderstood because my son told me that he was not selected to join the Singapore Airforce due to his imperfect eyesight when he enlisted a few years back.

Check with the CCA teacher in charge? Usually they will have the most accurate Information for your CCA. Pretty sure they want you to max the 2 points too.

You wont know by looking at the cca. CCAs organise such activities as and when they come by so the number of hours cannot be projected, you will know after you have completed the activity. The school will also organise, which is not cca dependent. You should pick a CCA based on interest. It will be hard to get your points if you dont enjoy the cca.

Let me share my experience (both personal as well as what I see in schools)

If the student is a student leader, organized out reach programs to the needy, represented school / Country in competitions, have the joined overseas performance tour, won medals etc ...

what would be the confidence level of this student ?
Would the student be very timid and shy away or would this person able to stand up the stage and give a speech ?
Is there leadership qualities in the student ?

If you are in the selection committee - how would you rate the student. ?
If I will to give him a scholarship - then would the student 'represent' the company when the he graduates and come work for the company. ?

And what impact this has on applications for scholarship.[/quote]It is considered very favourably if the year 5 student continue the same cca as the prior 4 years,ie you prob get selected over someone else who doesn't have experience. AFAIK, for scholarship applications, cca is not as important as being all rounder, ie results tops, external achievements, volunteerism, what you do during the break after A levels leading to university etc....

If you are referring to the bonus CCA points for O-levels, it's not relevant since IP students don't take O-levels.
There are some IP students who switch to O-level classes so LEAPS would be relevant to those.

The purpose of LEAPS, though, is to encourage participation in CCAs and for the students' holistic development.

CCA is important and a major part of a student's journey through secondary school, IP or not. If the decision is to only participate actively when there is a tangible benefit (bonus points), then I think that would be wasted and would be a mistake.

For most tertiary scholarships, apart from your academic achievements, the focus nowadays ( to shift away from academic results) is to showcase your leadership potential and achievements. CCA provides that platform for students to grow and attain those experiences. It is true that the balance between CCA activity and academic focus must be carefully balanced. This is especially true when students are in Sec 3. Typically, their grades will fall because, not only do they need to grapple with new subjects at a more demanding level compared to lower secondary, they will also take up leadership position in their CCA which will involve a lot of planning and work. My advice is let the student proceed with the CCA, if the academic results drops severely, talk to the CCA teacher and work out some arrangement for the child to catch up on his/her work.
