We have conducted music enrichment classes and string ensemble CCAs in MOE primary schools since 2015. Over the years, we have received many inquiries about studio classes.

We are happy to announce that we will be starting with two mini string ensemble classes for 7 to 9, and 10 to 12-year-olds from January 2023.

We are now accepting applications for our string group classes on Saturday afternoons in Ubi.

The deadline for registration is 31 December 2022.

Do note that there are limited slots for each class. We will look at opening further timeslots if there is overwhelming demand.

You can find more and register on our website: www.stringtheory.com.sg/studio
We can also be reached via WhatsApp at 8815 1968 during work hours if you would like to find out more.

Thank you, and have a great day ahead!

String Theory SG

Reply to All About Violin Classes and Teachers on Fri, 18 Nov 2022 19:32:03 GMT

Hi,

I’m an adult currently learning violin. I had done some grade 1 content previously with my former teacher. When I expressed my interest in taking ABRSM 2, my former violin teacher (private) is confident of me taking in 3 months’ time after taking her classes for 2 months only.
She will also go through the basic techniques and scales every class and it helped me build foundation to it.

However, due to schedule issue, I moved on to my current violin teacher (in a school). After learning 4 months with her and expressed my intention in taking ABRSM grade 2, she said I still need another 5 months to do that. This is a vast difference from what my previous teacher said…

Also, the current teacher has never used a METRONOME before in class. I’m starting to doubt her way of teaching as we always, quite aimlessly, just flip to one song to the other without mastering the song? It’s like… every lesson is a new song, doesn’t matter if I play badly. It felt kind of random, brief, no mastery, but just moving on to another new song every lesson. There’s no metronome and she did not practise or test me to play to the actual speed. So far, she had never used my Theory Book…

On the contrary, my former teacher used a METRONOME and perhaps take 2 lessons to learn a song to make sure I can play well, and faster and faster, to meet the actual speed of the song (e.g. Andante etc).

I’m not sure if it’s normal for violin teacher not to use metronome at all, and to go on to another song and did not require you to play up to the speed…

Can someone advise?

Main orchestra has 3 or 4 concert seasons each year and during concert seasons would rehearse Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Rehearsals can be tutti or sectionals and yea when they do have sectionals it is led by SSO instructors. The administration is not the best though. Teachers can change rather frequently - i had 4 changes in less than 3 years. heard that Mrs Lee is not the easiest person to work for. Teachers are not allowed to tell you if they are leaving - I tried to ask the admin, but they had not been forthcoming. everytime there is a change, it is very disruptive and a fair bit of time is wasted for the new teacher to find out where the level is and what needs to be worked on.

At end of day, much depends on the teacher who is teaching.
