They read a lot but they have to be interested. The best way to stop them reading something is to tell them that it will help their schoolwork. They, like me, garner a lot of miscellaneous info from reading fiction! I didn't really cope well with the Economist until I was in JC, and I was considered a very advanced reader. My 17yo daughter still can't cope. Time is a 'lighter' magazine, but very American. Time, RD etc to let your child read before deciding which one to subscribe. I did that for about 3 months. I let my eldest try TE and Time but he only likes TE. He read RD from P3 to P5/6.

HappyBlueBear

Reply to magazines for teenagers - recommendation on Fri, 18 Jul 2014 01:45:53 GMT

HappyFaye:
I'm not sure if Economist would be too challenging for him. Stories are less varied and less substantial, language is also simpler than before, and the magazine is a lot thinner than in the past!

Broader Persepctive - also disappointing. My kids flatly refused to read them after a couple of attempts as they are too 'school'-ish and not very interesting (to them, anyway). I read a few and find the writing either poorly expressed or overly bombastic. The content is OK, but if not well written, it's really hard to read. I'm not sure I want my kids to learn to write that way.

I'm looking for more suitable magazines too. I don't think my kids can keep up with a weekly like Time, and the Economist would drown them!

sharonkhoo

Reply to magazines for teenagers - recommendation on Thu, 17 Jul 2014 23:10:04 GMT

HappyFaye:
Ngl2010, does your ds read time magazine?
