For Maths, I normally recommend Nanyang School.

My DC1 did his PSLE last year 2018. DC1 used pencil for both Maths and Science and score A*. So I suppose no penalised. We proceeded with this after confirmation from 2 ex-PSLE markers for Maths and Science Teachers.

both my kids used pencil for psle maths.
they are now in sec 2 and sec 4.
i ever asked their maths teacher then, she said ok. I'm not sure now got change. both my kids got A* for maths. so i don't think got penalised for using pencil.

While it is aspiring and plausible, indeed, how many can really achieve this? Readers have to discern, be realistic and understand their own limitations and hope parents don't use this example to set overly high expectations for their kids.
Just weeks ago, I read an article in ST about how private universities' graduates fall much behind their peers from public universities and whether the former know about their job prospects plus some other discouraging comments.
Now another reporter from the same company is encouraging everyone to boldly pursue their dreams....sigh!!

Conclusion: Everyone is entitled to his own opinion and his opinion will be greatly affected by his personal experiences in life.

In our own family, my hubby was one of those who was a late bloomer. Yes it may be rare but it happens and it should be highlighted to give hope to the late bloomers among our children.


Somehow I realise that over the years many of us have been taught to view things critically/suspiciously rather than positively. I don’t know if it is the education system or the upbringing. But we must try and move towards a more positive way of looking at things. I believe this young man is going to be a great doc someday.

No doubt it is very rare, but other than newsworthiness, it encourages students to \"follow their dreams\" and that nothing in life is impossible.

Back when the student received his PSLE 181 T score, no one would have imagined that he would one day make it to NUS medicine. He may not have even have this dream then but along the way as he gained confidence and inspiration, he \"followed his dream\" and with hardwork and some luck, it did come true for him.

I thought this is very inspiring to many students who may have just received not so stellar PSLE results and to encourage them to keep going.

If it is possible (no matter how rare) that someone with a 181 score can actually make it to NUS medicine, then anything is possible for the thousands of students not to lose hope but
to keep working hard on their dreams, whatever that maybe :drool:

In the article it was mentioned that he was playful and only “flipped through my textbooks a day before my PSLE exam”, it’s already amazing he made it to N(A) with such poor attitude towards PSLE. So it’s not a miracle that he’s a late bloomer, rather he chose to achieve his potential at a later stage.

In reality there are kids who’ve tried hard in their studies for years prior to PSLE with daily tuition yet may not make it to Express. Will be personally more interested to hear about the success stories of such kids later in life..
