I heard that some agents will so called help those full time domestic helper that trying to earn extra income to find works for them on their off day to work illegally, beware and double check their status.
My wife have told me about this and since then we've been very careful in hiring a maid. We always have a part time maid which is better than full time. And we make sure to check their paper works and do background check before hiring one.

if part time is rushing for time, then there will be lots of things dropped or scratched...mum's vacuum cleaner has changed several parts because the part time pulls the vacuum cleaner to the max as she is lazy to switch to another plug. fans are scratched. mum mainly needs need her to vacuum and mop, clean windows.

It doesn't matter whether she has rest during that window or not. Working outside also not always busy or productive...but the official hours are much shorter...about half.
maid had rest time in the afternoons. i don't make her work like a slave.
i am very relieved i do not need to have a maid just before younger one went to p1. we have gone without a maid close to 7 years. so shiok not having a stranger in the house. fortunately hubby is not the fussy type and doubles up as my cockroach killer-cum-electrician-cum plumber.

my maid didn't work 16 hours then. they had ample rest but the problem is when they are expected to sleep, they sms or yak on the phone till wee hours of the morning and can't get up at 6am. i gave them 8 hours of sleep from 10pm. 10pm on the dot, they zoom into the room.

Hmmm....what do you expect when you pay someone $400~500 (?) a month working on a 16 hrs shift 24/7?? That's no more than $20 a day....or $1+/hr....did I get my math right?

my mum is facing the same problem too. the present one is now asking for $70 for 3 hours. she vacuums and mops the floor, cleans the windows and kitchen wall.
ironing, changing bed sheet, washing clothes done by parents. mum is thinking of getting a maid.
pros of having maid:
-can get her to mop the floor daily
-prepare food prior cooking and the washing
-change bedsheet and putting back clean ones
-ironing

cons:
*incur additional costs like salary, maid levy, insurance, checkup
*water bill sure shoot up
*having a stranger in the house
*attitude problem or maid is lazy/unwilling to learn.

So what I do is to engage part time help on an adhoc basis for heavy duty work only such as cleaning windows and balcony doors; basically any chores that require using a ladder and strength. I found one reliable one. My best friend’s 18 year old son (poly student) who is pretty good in cleaning windows. He is very happy with the rate I gave him, $20/hour, much better than his earnings from the other part time jobs he is doing. It is expensive on my end, but I am fine with it as it is on an adhoc basis and I don’t have to monitor his work (unlike all the other part time workers I have engaged from those cleaning agencies). So I shall stick with this arrangement for as long as he wants to.

In the first session, the part-time helper seems diligent. After the first two sessions or so, part-time helpers seem to start to dilly-dally in doing things.. and 4 hours just passed and not enough time to finish ironing the clothes. Ok, my experiences.. :scared:

I gave up on part time help. Full time helper doesn’t cost too much more. About $600 with helper going on 1 or 2 off day per month. So far it’s worked better for me.

The rate has increased from $10 in 2004 to the current $15-17 an hour. I have engaged Chinese PRC nationals; a Hong Kong citizen and a Myanmar national before. Out of the list, only one can make it but unfortunately, she is running a stall in a school now and can come over to help me during the school holidays. I am a reasonable person and will not give my helpers unreasonable time frame to complete their tasks nor ask them to do tasks I would not do myself; yet I have part time helpers who:


1. Demaned year end bonus and payment even if she went on holiday(ie no work done) and this despite the fact that her standard was not up to par. I had to re-iron the clothes she ironed and the TV console had not been wiped for weeks.
2. Damaged my vacuum cleaner every 3 months due to rough handling.
3. Broke my new rainwater shower head that cost me $400 per set due to rough handling.
4. Cook desserts in my house without my permission.
5. Left water streak marks on the window panes as she had used dirty wet rags to wipe and refused to change her way even after I showed her a better alternative.
6. Did not bother to bend down and mop underneath the beds.
7. Clean only the middle part of the windows and neglect the top and bottom parts.
8. Left the tap running while she was busy with other chores.

I have since given up engaging any part time helpers and do everything myself despite having frozen shoulders for more than year already. And guess how much I paid for that stubborn maid who used dirty rags to wipe my windows? $388 for 4 sessions only at 4 hour per session! Yes, I am tempted to become one myself,if not for my frozen shoulders.

Part time helper generally is more experienced and more efficient as they will try to finish up the chores that they need to do within the 4 hours. But as I have 2 young children at home, having a full time domestic helper still makes more sense. If I need any help on the young children, I can get the full time helper to help.

Some full-time maids can be so inefficient that you still need retain the part-time cleaner, have a nanny come to your house and look after kids or still send kids to external care. These are experiences of some people I know.
