I am very pleased with Jia En’s final year English result. Her grade jumped from U to B!

Jia En started with The Write Corner since her primary school. After PSLE, she continued with TWC on her secondary school journey. In the mid-year exam, we were shocked that she received a U grade for English. We were concerned but we were not worried. We have full faith and confidence that TWC teachers will work out a way to help Jia En to improve.

Indeed, the teacher in charge at TWC was very fast to customise some parts of their teaching to match Jia En’s learning ability. Although some parts of the lesson are customised, her teacher continue to stay close to the standard curriculum. By doing so, it helps Jia En to build confidence and enthusiasm in English. This also motivates her to do as well as her peers.

Thank you for trusting your children to learn with us for the past two years. We hope to clarify some of the issues raised and will reach out to you to discuss how we can continue to help your children learn at TWC.

Since 2017, we have revamped our Weekly Spelling Test to help students achieve better vocabulary retention. By using different formats of testing such as mix-and-match, fill in the blanks, form your own sentences, peer-testing, reading aloud etc., we aim to help TWC students better retain new vocabulary they learn here. Research has shown that repeated testing can help bolster long-term learning. A notice was sent out to parents in January 2017 with regard to this curriculum improvement.

For all P1 to P6 levels, more 20 vocabulary exercises for each level have been completed with all TWC students. If you did not receive the worksheets, do let us know so we can provide them again for the lessons your children have attended.

We hold our teachers to stringent standards on the issue of taking leave and to the best of our ability, avoid any change in teachers.

We extend our sincerest apologies and will be reaching out to you personally to discuss how we can help your children. We would like to encourage you to raise any future concerns with our centre managers or supervisors directly to discuss how we can better help your children at TWC.

The Write Corner

Also there is no follow up on the child progress on weaker areas by the teacher.
Only once after the teacher supervisor called out the teacher to give feedback to me.
There was more than twice these undergrad teachers change in a few months or go for long vacation near our kids exams, hence their progress is affected greatly. Both my kids dropped in their school results to a near passing score for compo in major exams and affected their writing interests and confidence.

We have since dropped you a private message and hope to share with you more about our curriculum, and how we ensure the quality of teaching, curriculum and marking at TWC.

While we acknowledge that qualifications make good indicators of how competent a teacher (particularly in his/her language abilities), we strongly believe that it is not the only indicator. Experience, aptitude, willingness to grow as an educator and to master one’s craft are some other factors that contribute to what makes a successful teacher.

Though a young team, the teachers at TWC have proven to deliver consistent improvement in results over the past 3.5 years. More than 70% of our students see improvement in their results within 6 months and 71% of the students at TWC scored an A and A* in the 2016 PSLE examination.

We also have stringent processes in place to ensure the quality of teaching at all 3 branches:

- All our teachers are hired after strict interview process of 4 stages (vetting of resume for relevant experience, teaching & marking assessment, interview with teacher supervisors and management)
- Teachers follow strict and consistent TWC teaching and marking protocols
- Closely supervised in-house training for at least 3 to 6 months
- We have teacher supervisors at EACH branch to ensure high quality of classes and continual training of teachers
- Small class size of 6 students ensures that each individual child gets sufficient attention

Irene444, we hope this short explanation has clarified some of your doubts. We will be happy to get in touch should you have any more questions!

The Write Corner

We would like to assure other parents that this is not the norm.

In the unlikely event that we have to switch teachers, it is the protocol that the teacher taking over sits for the lessons to observe and build rapport with the students. The teacher handing over is also required to give both a comprehensive verbal and written handover of every child’s strengths and weaknesses. Teacher supervisors also help to ensure a smooth handover.

We extend our sincerest apologies again and will be reaching out to you personally to discuss how we can help your child learn and make effective use of the materials he has been given over the past 5 months.

The Write Corner

Dear Mum4everr,

Thank you for your honest feedback. If you go to reputable tuition centre that engaged ex-MOE Teachers, the chance of changing teacher is super low.

My children used to attend that centre. I must said the teaching material are good for basic learners. The type of Teachers are VERY important too. We were lucky to have a responsible teacher who stayed on until the end of the children’s exam. After much improvement, we jump into another centre for advanced improvement.

On top of this, he has many relief teachers in between due to reasons such as teacher went on exam leave, teacher went overseas on vacation, etc. All these happen before my son’s school examinations.

Please also take note of the one-time registration fee of $50. If you plan to stop lessons for one term and continue the following term, they will charge you another $50 registration fee. I’m not sure if it is the norm, but I do know of one reputable enrichment center that charges an admin fee of less than $10 for such an arrangement since the one-time registration fee has already been paid.

.

Memorizing good phrases is only a small part of what they teach.
