Despite what the Ministry says, we all know that not all schools are good schools. So, that's an important info missing. Notwithstanding, the kid is clearly a strong academic student.

However, his weak or average performance in some competitions will put him on a lower standing compared to many others who are probably just as strong academically but can also do well in these competitions. Imagine yourself being on the selection panel, how would you grade and who would you pick first?

This, knowing the boy is good academically, but weak in overall standing, why bother asking him to waste time to prepare for something where the probability of success is low (unless he goes for second tier secondary schools, but what's the point)?
