I have an old ankle injury so high ankle shoes helps me better. My Merril was great for my winter Iceland hiking. Water proof and good grip even in snow. Except on icy roads then need crampons. Waterproof very important for snow and slush when the snow starts to melt and mix with the dirt. I can’t imagine if my shoes were not waterproof.</p>
