I have an old ankle injury so high ankle shoes helps me better. My Merril was great for my winter Iceland hiking. Water proof and good grip even in snow. Except on icy roads then need crampons. Waterproof very important for snow and slush when the snow starts to melt and mix with the dirt. I can’t imagine if my shoes were not waterproof.

It also depends if you need high ankles support. Usually high ankle boots are not light.

Is mesh type waterproof?
Probably resistant but not water proof.
But advantage is that it will not remain soggy if for whatever reason they get wet...and also, I supposed, lighter than those heavily padded ones (industrial/army boots lookalikes).

Actually, do one look for waterproof ones or heavy duty mesh type that can dry faster when wet?

Depends on where you want to hike.
In Singapore, confirm must get waterproof ones.
In some ang mo countries where the weather / season is dry, those mesh type is ok.

Hi, everyone. Can you share recommendations for a good pair of boots to use for hiking trips? Preferably something not too heavy to allow for comfortable backpacking ( lotsa walking ), waterproof and has good traction for both wet and dry weather conditions. Thank you in advance.

Yes, Merell and Salomon has some lightweight models.

That said, lightweight models don't last as long. Heavier ones, usually due to the leather used, tend to last longer.

Spoil liao have excuse to change new designs mah 😄

Can be quite tiring to walk long hours/distance with heavy boots. Some petite ones may prefer lighter boots.

I think it depends on how technical you would like your hiking boots. SAF boots is surprisingly ok if you aren't looking at ice and snow, or too demanding stuff :rotflmao:


I would go for Merell or Salomon or Garmont (last one if I'm feeling very rich). You can visit speciality stores like http://camperscorner.com.sg or shop online at https://www.rei.com (their outlet store / discounted items are often good value).

Can use for normal trekking, hiking and with use of clampons for glacier hikes.
We used this for our Iceland & Lapland trip with lots of ice and snow conditions, and other countries in raining seasons too.

The Big Country in Novena Square carry quite a few models from this brand. U can check it out, and see if the weight is ideal for you. Hiking boots are not exactly light.

DC uses North Face hiking boots.
