Your kid good in 3rd language? For Germany, France and Japan, their University fees are FREE plus they get subsidies for University dorm and meals. French wine is cheaper than coke. Buy locally produced potatoes to cook and drink fresh milk, maybe whole year living expenses around $10k/year.

SMU is not a full pledged university and its strengths are in other areas. SIT and SUTD are more for techies. I may be wrong (don’t bash me ah) but I feel that they were set up because a lot of poly grads want to go NUS/NTU but couldn’t, so they were distributed to SIT and SUTD. I guess everyone has a set of preferences. SUTD and SIT also not as well established so in terms of getting good internship opportunities, NUS/NTU is likely to have more contacts.

If there’s a shortage of nurses and nowhere else to hire more, we all might end up looking after our own elderly parents or young kids & spouses, like in wartimes. Wld parents with daughters inspire our daughters to fill the gap for the passion of the role? If the pay gap is closer btwn doctors & nurses, wld parents encourage their girls to take up nursing degree instead of a medical degree or other professions in law, finance or real estate? Now the gap is not $200-$300, starting pay between a nurse grad and med grad it’s like $3K+ vs $6K+. Still not wide enough? If doctors feel that the nurses’ salary is very close to them and don’t want to be doctors, they can choose to be nurses cos we need many more nurses. So wanting to a be doctor is because the pay is high or got passion? Or does seeing the pay gap shrinks hurt the doctors’ ego?

Now I am not even asking to cut doctor’s starting pay, I am simply asking to increase nurse’s starting pay to make the profession more competitive.

Regarding heirarchy, doctors and nurses should be seen as close partners or should it be a boss and subordinate relationship?

My Malaysian friend shared that her nephew, currently a doctor in Malaysia, has to double up as a night shift nurse because in his hospital, there is a severe shortage of nurses. He is super stressed and tired. If Singapore doesn’t have enough nurses, public hospital doctors here will also to double up nurses.

Don’t be surprised, one day, not enough nurses in Malaysia, the local government will say, nurses not allowed to come Singapore. Just like how they stop our chicken supply. Other countries may soon follow suit.

I shld clarify that salary that does not reflect the distinct job level will not attract doctors into the profession if the gap btwn them & nurses are not distinct at entry point. As it is to be in the medical profession is a calling that some avoid.

If u can accept that in life, there is always heirarchy. Life itself exist a bias. Nurses will always lag behind in the job grade vis-a-vis doc, just as the lab technician or janitor will hv diff job ladders. They can’t be climbing the same as they’re not equipped to do so. They’re just totally diff jobs.

Oh, btw, the yonds past, girls used to dream of meeting & marrying doctors. I used to tutor a young boy, whose mum married a doc & live in a huge Bukit Timah GCB. W/o walking clients all over town to close deals or get frustrated with dry seasons without closing deals, she alr snagged her prize. She retired early to be a tai tai. I certainly hope today’s girls go into nursing with the passion to learn patient care for its value to contribute with their heart & soul into the career. Many can’t get the grades to study medicine, hence they do sth else like pharmacology, or chiropractic, and the like. Ultimately, it’ll lead to diff paths & diff remuneration ladders, unless they set up their own practice or design life supporting equipments & make it rich. That’s ano story departing fr remuneration ladder.

Many nurses now have degrees; some go on to specialised training,; some even go on to PhDs.
I think it has to be approached from both ends - nurses with higher qualifications who are able to take on more responsibilities, and more responsibilities being handed over to nurses rather than needing a doctor for simple procedures, prescribing etc.
In the UK, I benefited from highly trained midwives and nurses (\"health visitors\") - other than seeing a GP a few times, I had 2 babies delivered and raised in the UK (till the age of 2) without seeing any other doctor.
